In 1933, it wasn’t known as “the Nazi salute”. It goes back to the Roman era, the Nazis just tainted it.

Right you are! In fact, before WW II such a salute was quite often used as a patriotic salute to the American flag.

Up until WWII, that was the way Americans saluted the flag while saying the Pledge of Allegiance.
