Police say a 50-year-old resident of the neighborhood was going to the ATM at a Citizens' Bank branch when he was approached by two young men that police describe as being around 18 years old.

Wow.
Prayers for a speedy recovery for the permit holder.
Prayers for a speedy conviction for the thugs.
wait...”a sawed off rifle”. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of such a thing. Oh sure, a sawed off shot-gun - kinda makes since with spread of shot and such. But a rifle?
a sawed off rifle
Makes it easier to conceal, just as a sawed-off shotgun is easier to conceal. Maybe they couldn’t afford two handguns, so simply did the best with the tools they had at the time.
During the Depression they were called whippet guns. Could be either shotguns or rifles.
In some locations rifles may be easier to purchase (less paperwork, etc) than a handgun. A rifle can then be converted into the equivalent of a handgun by shortening the barrel (down to 6” or so, and sawing off the buttstock behind the grip area. While not as concealable as a true handgun, the overall length may end up being in the 12” range and concealable. It is against Federal law to do this modification. The minimum barrel length to qualify as a rifle is 16” with a minimum overall length of 25”. Anything shorter than these limits is classified as a handgun.
I guess you maybe too young to remember Steve McQueen in the TV show Bounty Hunter. I think he had a sawed off rifle.
What, you never seen “Wanted Dead or Alive” with Steve McQueen?
He had a sawed off 44 Winchester (silly really, but made him a tough guy for the show). Advantage— longer than a long pistol and 44.

A sawed off Garand? What a waste.
Thanks— my post later with the intro to an episode at 2:26.
Couldn’t find a sawed off rifle @ http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Hunter,_The_(1980) for “The Hunter”.
What I thought was cool was the bean bag launcher he used.
SBR or short barrel rifle can be used with a stamp much like the stamp given for use of a machine gun or a suppressor.
What’s also odd— Wanted Dead or Alive was supposed to be in 1870. But Steve’s got a sawed off Winchester 1892.
My bad.....forgot about the tv show. Thought you meant the movie.
sorry.
That's racist?
