The U.S. unemployment rate fell to a seven-year low in August as employers added a modest 173,000 jobs, a key piece of evidence for the Federal Reserve in deciding whether to raise interest rates from record lows later this month.
The Labor Department says the unemployment rate fell to 5.1 percent from 5.3 percent, the lowest since April 2008.
Hiring in August was the lowest in five months, but the government revised up the June and July job growth by a combined 44,000. From June through August, the economy generated a solid 221,000 jobs a month, up from an average of 189,000 in March through May.
"Average hourly earnings edged higher during the month, rising just over 0.3 percent. Over the last twelve months, higher hourly earnings and a modest uptick in average hours worked pushed weekly earnings up by 2.5 percent. Recent data suggests that gains may be accelerating, which -- if sustained -- would be a positive development for workers," Jim Baird, partner and chief investment officer for Plante Moran Financial Advisors, wrote in a note after the release.
Steady hiring could encourage the Fed to raise rates for the first time in a decade. Still, stock market turbulence, a persistently low inflation rate and a sharp slowdown in China could complicate its decision.

Well, I lost my job — for not being Hispanic, never mid bilingual. Medical field jobs in texas, forget it. Press 2
How many of those jobs were part time and/or government?
Interestingly, they don't say, "the unemployment rate fell to 5.1 percent," just that Obama''s minions claim it fell. Even the media no longer believe the whoppers told in DC.
Yes, but they are still lying for them, by omission.
3 million births a year ...
2.5 million deaths per year ...
and (if my lousy math is correct) .. and according to this article , 1/10th of 1% new jobs were created .... AFTER revision, of course
WHY IS THE FAGGOT KENYON STILL IN THE WHITE MOSQUE ????
What do I tell my high school seniors ?
And just how many of these jobs are 40 hrs/week and pay benefits?
They never say, do they?
Besides 189,000 new jobs over a population of 315 million is anemic.
Too many of them are service jobs. Nothing wrong with them - except they are low paying. The people doing them want better jobs and there aren’t many opportunities for them to move up the employment ladder.
Trading good paying jobs for low wage jobs is like buying stocks high and selling them low - a good way to go broke.
210 million in the work force with 94 million of them not participating, of those participating how many are city, state and federal job’s. When you do a little simple subtraction we realize just how many of us are footing the bill for the rest.
Those working are going to say frig it soon enough. Will they then say the unemployment rate is zero because no one is looking for work?
wow! 173,000 jobs!
if it keeps at this pace, those 94m people will be employed in 543 months!
way to go 0bama! that democrat platform is working as well as always!

Stating the obvious, no? But I understand your frustration...many your seniors will leave your charge and enter the den of liberalism in a matter of months; your enlightenment may be their last chance to have the knowledge to change their future for the better, not acquiesce to irrelevance & direction while their own children's future is further diminished...
What do I remember of my own 'educators'? Not the curriculum...I remember the guidance offered me via their personal beliefs, their encouragement in the classroom. In hindsight, it's shameful they felt constrained to offer more.
Many will remember you as well, I'm sure...chin up.
what to tell high school seniors? that’s easy.
they’ll have a very difficult time finding a job. at which point, they’ll have two options.
1. become a democrat and hop in the welfare line. they will enjoy consist food stamps and govt housing their entire life.
2. hone their skills. study the business market. bond with friends and start a company. learn to compete and provide for themselves.
then again, these are the choices everyone has always had in life.
I got elected two years ago and I won primary for the ballot listing for November as a write in
I have publically lambasted the super and asst and called out the 'teachers' ... and nothing has happened to me .... they have a confidence that frightens me
I'm not afraid of what they can/might do to me ... I see them continueing and escalating the destruction of young lives and it pisses me off!
I have recruited one community member (big and hairy ... think Duck Dynasty and redneck conservative) to run for an open slot (write in) in Novemeber
Not sure what we can do, but we're going in swingin'
You have our proud moral support.
Kudos!
You forgot to include the growth in working age population is around 83000/month so it would calculate out to over 1,000 months.
I really never understood “added new jobs”.
Are these positions that didn’t exist prior to August 1st ?
or are these open positions that were filled since August 1st ?
