I don’t think he was against it then for it. He played it out.
Now its to his advantage.
Trump gets more out of it than the pubbies:
They should drop any opposition to him appearing on any primary ballot.
He gets the nominal, at least, support and not active opposition.
The other candidates would have to support him if he wins the nomination.
He sways those who might have supported him but not at the party’s expense.
And if he chooses he can walk away and go 3rd party anyway.

(No, Mr. Franklin, we could NOT keep it.)

The others said "yes" at the last debate without thinking it through and considering options. Trump took his time, considered his options, and (unlike the others) had an elaborate meeting with the RNC chair when he signed it. He turned it into a major event with that very nice press conference, which demonstrated that reporters have learned how to behave at a Trump press conference. He negotiated from a position of strength, given his high poll numbers. This AM, a mumbling Jeb said he'd support Trump if Trump's the nominee.
I'd say Trump made the best of a bad situation where the RNC thought they had him backed against the wall. Instead, Trump came across as very Presidential.
