BEIJING (Reuters) - President Xi Jinping announced on Thursday he would cut troop levels by 300,000 as China held its biggest display of military might in a parade to commemorate victory over Japan in World War Two, an event shunned by most Western leaders.
China's confidence in its armed forces and growing military assertiveness, especially in the disputed South China Sea, has rattled the region and drawn criticism from Washington.
Xi, speaking on a rostrum overlooking Beijing's Tiananmen Square before the parade began, said China would cut by 13 percent one of the world's biggest militaries, currently 2.3-million strong.
He gave no time frame for a reduction that is likely part of long-mooted military rationalization plans, which have included spending more money on high-tech weapons for the navy and air force. Troop numbers have been cut three times already since the 1980s.
"Prejudice and discrimination, hatred and war can only cause disaster and pain," Xi said. "China will always uphold the path of peaceful development."

Greg Austin, a professorial fellow at the East-West Institute in New York, said the troop cuts had nothing to do with curbing military power.
“It’s a determination to expand military power by redirecting money to higher impact, higher technologies, which can have more strategic effect,” he said, referring to the maritime, cyber and space frontiers.
Peng Guangqian, deputy head of China’s Council for National Security Policy Studies, said the array of equipment on display was intended to show the combat readiness of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
“This indicates a change of the PLA training strategy; with more focus on actual combat,” Peng told the official Xinhua news agency.
Probably every 4-F and every out of shape men over 40.
Down from 500 Million.
This could be the answer to world peace! No one can afford a military anymore.
PEOPLE’s LIBERATION ARMY:
The PLA is the world’s largest military force, with a strength of approximately 2,285,000 personnel, 0.18% of the country’s population.

And then those 300,000 laid-off troops will be kept busy creating a new reserve currency to replace the US dollar and completely destroy the US economy!!! /s
I have it on very good authority that the PLA has stepped up recruiting efforts in Liaoning and Jilin provinces.
These provinces have large number of Chinese people who know Korean and who have knowledge of the border region of North Korea.
The Korean border is very porous in that area.
RE: In a war with China you could kill a million a day and it would take 3 years to finish the job.
And don’t forget the tens of millions living in all other parts of the world...
They don’t have Bill Clinton to help them anymore.
They could have Hillary ( for the right price ).
While the US Army cuts it’s forces TO 300,000. (Barely kidding, we are actually going to like 460,000.)
After their stock market tanked and they devalued their the past couple of weeks the price of rat meat and rice skyrocketed and they couldn’t afford to feed that many...
This may not be so ominous. The Korean peninsula has destabilized (well, it hasn’t been that stable in recent history actually) lately, and things heat up, our first priority would likely be to protect Seoul, while waiting for reinforcements to maneuver against the north. If the PLA helped out by striking from the North, I don’t think we would have a problem with it. If you recall the decades of problems Germany had when East Germany was unified due to the economic disparity, you can imagine the South wants know part of rebuilding the North and sustaining them for the next fifty years while they get on their feet, nor do we. China on the other hand, may be interested.
And we are to believe them?
If they want Hildabeast they will have to take her for free. I’m not paying to get rid of our trash. I’d even throw in Barry!
