Donald Trump Wanted To Make Charlie Rangel HUD Secretary In 1999

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said in November 1999 that, if elected president, he wanted to make Charles Rangel, the Democratic Congressman from New York, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

At the time, real estate magnate was considering running for president as a member of the Reform Party. Asked by CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer if he’d “given some thought to a potential Trump Cabinet,” Trump mentioned Rangel as his top choice to lead HUD.

“Well, let’s go — like HUD,” Trump said. “I think Charlie Rangel is a terrific guy. He’s a congressman from New York. He has been a powerful guy. Now the Democrats are not in power, but I think he’d be terrific at HUD.”

Rangel has been a member of the House since 1971 and is still in office. His website touts his record promoting affordable housing in New York’s 13th Congressional District.

Other Trump Cabinet picks would have included Colin Powell as secretary of state and General Electric CEO Jack Welch as treasury secretary. Trump said that John McCain would be “a very interesting candidate” for secretary of defense.

In the interview, Trump also predicted that, if he won the Reform Party’s nomination, he would “take more votes away from the Democrats” than the Republicans in the general election. He ended up withdrawing from the race in February 2000.

The polling data released earlier this week(on Rachel Maddow) showed that 65% of Trump supporters don’t think that Obama is a Christian or a US citizen.

Who cares who what Obama is..

I care what TRUMP ISN’T... He isn’t conservative..

I’m not saying Trump is Conservative.

I am saying that Walker is NOT a conservative...and is part of the Rove/Ryan/Preibus RINO cabal.

Please stay focused...at least Trump is saying what needs to be said and the polling reflect he is NOW speaking for the majority of normal, patriotic Americans.

Well, in the first place, I'm not a Trumpkin. I'm a Cruzkin. At this point, I could vote for Trump if Cruz fades away (I hope he doesn't).

So, you should never assume anything.

I was asking the FReeper how many people she has converted to Walker. She posts anti-Trump crap 24/7. It gets annoying. I dare say, if Cruz was in first place, it would be non-stop anti-Cruz BS.

And, you're right. I could overlook a lot from a candidate who tells it like it is.

I'm a piker compared to others posting about Trump's history. If you don't care about his history and positions then why does it bother you? I guess it does bother you. It should bother you. I don't post anti-Cruz so just stick to what you know, if you find out what that is.

Guess I am, because I don't trust politician's campaign rhetoric!

Apparently you do! I'm quite positive that every single one of the Anti-Trump folks around here prefer appearance over substance, which is why they're willing to overlook amnesty in their own candidates.

I’m not convinced Trump isn’t for amnesty either. He’s said repeatedly, when asked about his deportation plans, specifically about deporting whole families that he’d deport them all but then “let the good ones back in”. He’s used that phrase repeatedly. If you don’t think that’s amnesty you’re deluding yourself.

I don't mind it since: 1) It will be based on merit and not on any other factor, which is a system we lack. 2) There will be an immigration moratorium. 3) An American worker's first policy. 4) Higher standards for all immigrants requiring they will not be going straight on welfare.

If all that remains true, there won't be many, if any, coming back, considering 80 to 90 percent of illegals in California-- as an example-- live below the poverty line.

Trump is like Bloomberg. They are not conservatives, liberals, progressives, libertarians, Republicans or Democrats.

They are egomaniacs.

They are above parties, ideology and labels because they think they are so much smarter than their fellow billion fellow citizens.

They have no humility.

A piker? I wouldn't call you that! But, you sure are one nasty piece of work. No wonder you're up all night spewing your venom.

Now that would be something noteworthy. However, I’m not even remotely interested in hearing what Trump or his minions say he’s going to do when his actions both past and present speak clearly enough.
