A new poll in early battleground Iowa has former brain surgeon Ben Carson surging into a tie with Donald Trump for the first time in the GOP presidential contest a stunning jump for a political novice who is the latest outsider to shake up the race.
Trump and Carson, who came to prominence when he laced into President Obama at a televised prayer breakfast in 2013 as the president looked on, each got 23 percent in the Monmouth University poll released Monday. Former Hewlett-Packard executive Carly Fiorina another outsider who has never held elective office is third at 10 percent. Its the first time in a month that Trump hasnt had the lead all to himself in one of the four early-voting states. When GOP voters in Iowa were asked if the next president should be someone outside of government, 66 percent said yes. Only 23 percent opted for someone with government experience. People are hungry for something different, something that has not been tried before, Iowa state GOP chair Jeff Kaufmann told The Post. Certainly a neurosurgeon that is involved in politics is new. Its out of the box, its fresh, all of those adjectives that people claim they want. I always knew, obviously, Republicans are not fans of President Obama, Kaufmann added. The depth and intensity of that is actually more than what I had believed it was.
Carson has impressed GOP crowds with his understated demeanor, slashing attacks on the president, and denunciations of political correctness. He is the only major black presidential candidate in either party, and grew up in tough Detroit neighborhoods raised by a single mom with only a third-grade education..

Carson deserves a second look. He’s a quality candidate. Could he be a hard ass if conditions called for it? That is the unknown.
Now if Ben Carson was a fish it would be a surging surgeon Sturgeon!
As noted on another thread, the best thing about the current polls is that the anti establishment candidates have 53% of the support. That’s excellent.
You are correct. “Dr. Ben Carson was blunt about his past as a Democrat on State of the Union Sunday, saying, I make no bones about the fact that I used to be a Democrat, I used to be a pretty left-wing Democrat in fact.
He is even more of an amateur than wee barry and was a DEM until very recently.
Gravis Marketing has a very poor track record in polling with some epic flubs. I would take anything from them with a pound or two of salt especially if it’s inconsistent with what all of the other polls are saying.
Policy as an argument is dead. Republicans and Democrats alike killed it with their lying and self-serving work over the last few election cycles.
National politics has been moving away from policy and towards presentation and personality since 1960. That movement is accelerating.
This is not the election for sentimentality over substance.
Conservatives need to stop trying to go for “aw shucks folksy” candidate and go for the win for once.
So you are saying, Go, Jeb!
Obama carried Iowa twice, correct?
You seemed confused. Trump is the anti-GOPe. Jeb is the GOPe candidate.
So the media says. In reality, they are both GOPe candidates.
you and jbush support carson.
Mr Gun Ban proponent pulls even with Trump- Swell
“... If he were the Republican nominee and took 50% of the black vote, it would be a catastrophe for the Democrats.”
You win the award for most ridiculous scenario on FR today. Only because Kevmo couldn’t be here to push a cold fusion thread.
Wel Uh no. This is an anomaly. The new Gravis poll just came out today and Trump is at 31% with Carson at about 15% which is more realistic.
I live Upstate NY. There are a LOT of crazy people in small towns (pops under 1000). Carson should just shut up and go play with his scalpels.
Here, here! ;)
