The peak, which is the tallest in North America, was named after the nation's 25th president and former Ohio governor, William McKinley, in 1896.

McKinley wasn't president until 1897.

A McKinley supporter in 1896 was the one who named it, informally. Later it was named officially along with a national park, in 1917.
