I’m betting they didn’t know the difference,
Disclaimer: I’m from NYC
The south did NOT want a war. They wanted to leave the Union for legitimate reasons.
The ONLY reason they lost is numbers. Too many union soldiers and Irish coming off the boat and drafted. And industry. North producing way too fast.
Lincoln didn’t care about the slaves. Just read some of his early letters. He is indifferent.
If i didn’t HATE HATE HATE the heat, I would be living in the south.
That's why air conditioning was invented my FRiend.
And the democrats (even then) did not want the Union to stand. They were against Lincoln. The CSA did not have legitimate reasons the leadership wanted slavery, a vile and pernicious practice (even in today’s world)
All of the above is an extreme simplification of the matter.

There is a cure for that, it’s called AIR CONDITIONING! but then you still have to go out sometimes, and you WILL melt.
The Lincoln-Douglas debates escaped you, eh?
