The prosecutor who gained national attention as a key player in the unsuccessful murder prosecution of Casey Anthony said Sunday that he committed no crime and never followed through with an affair on the cheating website, Ashley Madison.
Jeff Ashton, the State Attorney for Orange and Osceola counties in central Florida, said he wouldn't resign his post.
Ashton choked up several times during a news conference while publicly apologizing to his wife, their three children and his four adult children from previous marriages. He wouldn't say what impact the revelation has had on his marriage.
"While I indulged my curiosity about the site, it never went beyond that," Ashton said. "They were incredibly stupid choices. I ask the public's forgiveness for my shortcomings but those shortcomings have had absolutely no impact on the performance of my official duties."
Ashton said he signed up for the site two years ago because he was curious. But when asked why he never used it to cheat, he said he just couldn't go through with it.
He used his personal lap top on an office wireless network that is available to anyone who is at the courthouse complex in downtown Orlando, Ashton said.
The veteran prosecutor was at the center of the case against Anthony, who was acquitted in 2011 of the murder of her 2-year-old daughter three years earlier. Back in 1987, Ashton was the first prosecutor in the nation to introduce DNA-based evidence in a case. Ashton first joined the State Attorney's Office in 1981.
The prosecutor isn't the only Florida elected official who has had to acknowledge using Ashley Madison. Last Friday, state Rep. Ritch Workman said in a statement that he had clicked on the site three years ago when he was single. Workman said he never met anyone from the site.
Ashton called the news conference after the East Orlando Post online newsletter revealed that he had been on Ashley Madison. Ashton said he regretted giving ammunition to those who oppose him and said he hopes his three decades of service outweighs his transgression.
"Today, I'm not very proud of myself," Ashton said. "The post may have been political motivated but they had every right to do it. I did something incredibly stupid and I should have been called on it."

Good question Nick, it has occurred to me that it would be a typical dirty liberal trick to sign up conservatives at AM using an ‘alternate’ (but revealing) email address, just for the entertainment and harassment value.
Fancy thought, but he called a news conference and admitted to signing up to the site but says he never acted on it. Is this the case or is he just trying to get out in front of it like the Lanny Davis Template for the Clintons.
Shame on any married person being on it. Tough they are being outed and good for their spouses to know their character.
This is funny, I don’t care who you are.
They could try, but it would be a stupid move. A traceback of the originating IP address would show where the email came from. At some level, attempting to impersonate another individual would likely constitute wire fraud.
“I got caught, sob sob”.
Waiting for the obligatory: “I didn’t have sex with that..that...woman.”.
He should be more ashamed he blew a winnable case.
I tell my kids all the time that ANYTHING you do on the internet might just as well be on a billboard in front of the house.
If it works for the Prosecutor it should work for anyone, a simple apology being his own standards.
They would also need credit card information.
That “Ashley” Madison thing is a hoot; it’s so fake, only gullible people fall for it. (The “woman” on the main page is photoshopped out the wazoo & only exists in the puerile imagination of masturbating little boys!) Any woman who would sign on to that “Diseased Diddlers’ Website” searching for sex with a dozen “men” is about as glamourous as a toothless old crone.
He “indulged his curiosity”.
He never heard the old saying that “curiosity killed the cat”? It’s not a child’s rhyme. It’s for married people who flirt with adultery via porn or otherwise and for everyone who flirts with what it would be like to...rape or kill someone, for example.
What you put in your mind either weakens or strengthens your soul and spirit...your self control, creativity, personal power, honor, judgement, self trust and character. Porn (and other dark junk like reality shows and dark music) makes you weak; a dim bulb compared to what you could and should be.
Ask Josh Dugger and millions of other Americans who are walking talking family wreckers, rapists, child molesters and heart breakers. It makes our society give off a feeling of resentment, untrustworthy and sadness because the betrayal of love, loving sex (and family) is so widespread now. It’s reached the 100th monkey in our society and we can all see and feel it. You could cut the sadness and internal injury with a knife.
We should cut it out from our minds; our lives so we do not hurt others and ourselves, although it is so tempting to our lower nature and intelligence or mind. Look at and listen to the good, smart and honorable; not evil, stupid and dishonorable. The over used adage (and for atheists non-applicable) of “What would Jesus do” applies here in our lives. If you can, take up hobbies that allow you to be creative and be at peace with me, myself and I, do it. It’s enlightening, satisfying and healing.
