PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Friday declared his frontline troops in a "quasi-state of war" and ordered them to prepare for battle a day after the most serious confrontation between the rivals in years.

When I was first stationed in Korea, we got a briefing on the situation. Essentially both sides have all sorts of artillery and rockets, and a hot war would most likely begin with a long artillery exchange. Of course, all the barracks and motor pools are already dialed in as targets (the range of modern artillery fire has surpassed the buffer zone that is the DMZ).
One of Rumsfeld’s little talked about moves was to reduce the US military presence near the DMZ - precisely because the troops there could get barraged before we even knew a war was on. But we still have thousands of troops there - I hope this simmers down.
