I don't imagine children in Georgetown or Chevy Chase would have similar reactions to the same sound. The episode is evidence of glaring disparities in safety and gun violence in Washington, D.C. This city the seat of international power and influence, yet parts of it, particularly the poorest parts, are being terrorized by gun violence. We desperately need solutions to this crisis. As the world watches, what will we do about it?
Gun violence is on the rise in Washington, D.C. and the perpetrators are emboldened with violence spreading across the city. Those who pull the triggers are largely young black men, many from Southeast, D.C.

Interesting. It is actually NOT an anti-gun rant.
Because “community organizing” has been a specatular failure in Democrat run cities - Obozo want to take guns away from hunters in rural states.
The Mayor's Audacity of Hope challenge and vision to establish the Boys and Men of Color Initiative are laudable laughable. There, fixed it.
Be true to the 2nd Amendment.
Do not infringe on the right to keep and bear arms.
In a few short weeks, the Earth will begin to cleanse itself.
Within two years, 90% of the problem will be fixed.
Well, what does the black community propose to do about black youth, who all too often go down the wrong road in life?? So much for being inspired by Obama showing that a black man can be elected president; that they can aspire to anything.
How did youth gangs get such a stranglehold on the black community? How did gang attitudes gain such traction that critical numbers of black youth feel the need to commit crime and violence as a way of life???
I’m sure I’m a racist to even think about those sorts of issues.
As a result of the social pathology the politician cannot and will not confront black misbehavior.
As a consequence of the inability to confront and control black behavior blacks are starting to increase their criminal behavior; i.e. "knock out game;" mobs of blacks looting stores; replacement of Western man in sensitive positions; discrimination against Western man in jobs and academic positions; threats and insults. To use older and wiser language they have been given an inch and are now starting to take an EL.
I’m not worried about any of this anymore since I read someplace that in mid September a 2 mile wide ‘assteriod’ (no not moochie) is gonna smack down in the central US and we’ll all be wiped out anyway. :>{
A big part of the issue is that Lanier has shut down police operations against street corner, open air market drug sales in favor of going against Internet-based sellers.
This removes police presence from the streets, and limits attempts at “broken windows” style policing thats known to work.
So with reduced police presence and arrests it’s no surprise that streetcorner sellers have returned, bringing violence with them.
Get control of yourselves and your community.
Period.
I hope she isn’t doing anything important in her hospital job with thinking like this:
“Herein lies part of our problem — do they disregard us because we disregard them? Does this contribute to the lack of concern when innocent bystanders are struck by stray bullets? Maybe the answer is not to isolate them but rather include and embrace them.”
and
“Youth need structure, support and developmental activity to keep them engaged. They need sustainable, year-round alternatives to crime. How can we instill a sense of purpose in them, particularly if they are not receiving this structure and support at home? How many of these young men know how proud it may feel to dress in a suit and tie or to be responsible and held accountable? “
and
“I admit at times, particularly when riding the Metro, when I witness the attitudes and social behaviors among some of our youth, I feel discouraged....Sadly, we perceive young, black men with guns as operating in a parallel universe. Our fear of their weapons has paralyzed us, thereby rendering us incapable of reaching out to them. Addressing this problem means we must somehow muster courage — together — to disrupt the culture and mindset among young men like this one who accept the status quo and says, “this is just the way it is [out here].”
This sort of violence is to be expected in a poverty stricken city with no opportunities or social support, a severely underfunded school system and almost no financial aid from Congress.
I think I’ll go borrow enough money to buy a new Ferrari...
“This sort of violence is to be expected in a poverty stricken city with no opportunities or social support, a severely underfunded school system and almost no financial aid from Congress.”
You have part of that right. What you are missing is causal factors.
No opportunities comes from the high crime rate and high taxes.
No social support comes from the celebration of mistrust of the legal system and the welfare state that encourages irresponsibility and out of wedlock births.
“severely underfunded school system” What a joke. DC has had some of the highest funding and lowest performance per student in the nation for years.
The problem with D.C. schools is that the parents do not support a disciplined education with discipline and a respect for learning in the home.
The home is far more important to education than the school system is.
There are “poverty stricken” communities all around the country that do not have the crime and murder rates that D.C. does.
That is because the do not have the disfunctional culture and government of D.C.
