Sen. Ted Cruz was overshadowed during much of the first GOP debate, but he finished strong. And this might turn out to be a microcosm of his larger campaign plan.
True, Donald Trump is sucking up everyones oxygen. And, yes, logic would dictate that because he occupies the same populist space as Cruz Trump would take a disproportionate number of votes from the Texas conservative. But, instead, Cruz is polling well in third place, behind Trump and Ben Carson, according to a new Fox News poll.
And if Trump gets out of the race (for now, thats a big if ), its possible that Cruz could inherit at least some of Trumps supporters.
To be sure, its not clear that Trump could simply transfer his supporters (or their excitement) to someone else, even if he wanted to make an official endorsement. But who stands to gain more from a Trump exodus than Cruz (which, of course, explains why he has refused to criticize The Donald)?
I’m sick and tired of “stealth campaigns”.
Cruz is the one who benefits most from Trumps campaign. Except for Trump himself.
Trump is saying things in a way that Cruz cannot. Or will not. No doubt Cruz agrees with Trump on many issues.
Ssshhhhhh!
Stealth campaigns are OK. They are how people stay in it long enough to win. It’s the black-flag campaigns that are killing the Republicans.
In 2008, Fred Thompson, a personal friend of close political ally of John McCain stole the oxygen from the room for any conservative, then laid down and died without campaigning.
In 2012, Ron Paul ran as the libertarian, but refused to attack the Massachusetts socialist while he savagely plundered Santorum and Gingrich.
Cruz cooking bacon...
I thought this was true and thought it was a good strategy until the last few days.
I am no longer convinced that Trump will implode, he will have to be beaten.
Trump/Cruz to batter down the gates of Lord Foul.
Then a Cruz presidency to rebuild Camelot.
Trump/Cruz
