In 1913, Frank was convicted of murdering 13-year-old Mary Phagan, who worked in his Atlanta factory. The case, charged with race, religion, sex and class, exploded in a national media frenzy. When Georgia's governor commuted Frank's death sentence, citizens took matters in their own hands.
The case established the Anti-Defamation League as the country's most outspoken opponent of anti-Semitism. It also fueled the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan.
Until ADL lawyers pressed officials to posthumously pardon Frank in the 1980s, the case was hushed in Atlanta's synagogues, the homes of Old Marietta, and among Phagan's descendants.

I think he was guilty.
I saw a movie about it some time ago and they showed that she was murdered by a Black man.
One of the girl’s relatives studied the case for some time and eventually concluded that Franks was the murderer.
The evidence seems to point to the janitor. Most historians believe it was him I believe.
Evidently the MSM feels that the progressives are in danger of losing their complete mastery of the Jewish vote due to doubts engendered by Obama/Kerry giving the store away to the Iranians.
Time to resurrect the specter of the Klan, Rednecks and Republicans!
This guy doesn’t think so:

Makes for a good read, and he makes a compelling case for Franks’ guilt based on, you know, evidence.
Well, Steve Oney has made a career of playing ‘blame the ______ (Black guy)’. Frank brought in a team of the best New York lawyers that money could buy, so no one can say he didn’t have adequate representation.
In fact, one should view it for the civil rights breakthrough that it was - the jury accepted the testimony of a Black man against a white man.
Frank’s proponent finally prevailed upon a senile old man to recant and provide an alibi decades after the trial. Mann was never subject to cross examination as to his new story, and no one wanted to dig too deeply.
Were any Jewish folks involved in the making of the movie? It’s always been a big issue for New Yorkers of that faith; Frank wasn’t your typical Southern Jewish businessman. Those folks tended to be highly assimilated, unlike the carpetbaggers.
I have no idea who made the movie.
I grew up in a very conservative small town in the deep South.
I doubt there were more than a dozen Jews in DeFuniak but the ones I knew of were typically very well liked.
Interesting.
I saw this old movie about on TV it back in 1961. I still remember it!
THEY WON’T FORGET. (1937)

Yes, anti-Semitism wasn’t a problem in the South, as much as the New York crowd would like to say so. The only ‘exclusive’ establishments in the south were those which catered to the Yankees.
I dated a Jewish guy when I was in HS in our small, southern town. Never any problems. He still lives here and is a prominent psychologist. His mom was a sweetheart.
I heard of one Jewish doctor around Atlanta that was a leader in the Methodist Youth Fellowship in his small south Georgia town. His father owned the only store in town, and (if I have my small towns right) it was an hour drive to the nearest Jewish temple for worship on holy days since they were the only Jewish family in town.
Yankees try to project their bias onto Southerners, but it doesn’t work.
Same way with Indians - kids that had some Cherokee blood in them bragged about it at school.
Yep. I have Cherokee blood as well. Many people I know do. The rest in my bloodline is Welsh, Scots, and Irish.
I may have to eat my words. Wikipedia cites sources who describe the new american mercury as an anti-Semitic site dedicated to smearing Leo Franks.
The sources are the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the Anti-defamation league and the Jewish Forward. The first source is untrustworthy, the latter two, not so much.
A lot more of us have American Indian blood than probably even we know. It took a long time for me to learn that I did on both my parents’ sides of the family. The history went very far back & not much of it survived in courthouse records. - I think people tended to try to hide some aspects of their ancestry. Also, Scripture refers to genealogy as “useless genealogy”; so I don’t set a whole lot of store in genealogy. I do have many of the physical characteristics of the Indian; but nothing in writing that would entitle me to live on a “rez” somewhere. Just as well.
It is the centennial of the lynching. Anniversaries always prompt stories like this.
Many things happened 100 years ago, plus or minus a week or so. The types of events chosen for special emphasis by the MSM occupy a very narrow portion of the spectrum of important events.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ran the story because it was local and fit their world view. CBS & AJC agree on most things.
