GRAND FORKS Continuing to play as UND/North Dakota wouldn't violate any NCAA rules unless fans continued to cheer for the Fighting Sioux and other schools complained about it.
The NCAA passed rules restricting its members from using Native American imagery in 2005, and after a drawn out battle with tribes, lawmakers and university representatives, the University of North Dakota ultimately reached a settlement agreement and retired its Fighting Sioux name in December 2012. The school has played as UND/North Dakota ever since.
But it's common knowledge in the Grand Forks area that the end of the national anthem at UND hockey games always ends with the crowd singing "the home of the Sioux!" and fans displaying the old logo are commonplace. If this continued and other schools complain, the NCAA told UND President Robert Kelley they could impose sanctions.

The NCAA is about as corrupt as an organization can be. No one cares what they say.....
Like Trump said....this PC cr**
I don’t think they’ve gone after FSU and their scrawny looking Seminole. It’s this very short, scrawny Indian running threateningly and yelling with a tomahawk held high.
They could get Siouxed.
They should call themselves the Fighting UNDies.
Why Native American? Why not Viking?
Reason is Norwegians are not a certified victim group, empowered to run over the rights of the rest of the people for real or imagined offenses.
Same reason there are no protests about Notre Dame Fighting Irish or Boston Celtics. There has to be a grievance group involved to get protests going.
Based on their reasoning of nicknames being offensive, many names should be changed.
Dallas Cowboys is offensive to real cowboys.
Green Bay Packers is offensive to real meat packing workers.
San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Angels, and New Orleans Saints are all offensive to the Catholic church.
Pittsburgh Steelers is offensive to real steel workers.
Bullafo Bills is offensive to the memory of the real Buffalo Bill Cody.
All the animal nicknames are offensive to the animals.
What about Cowboys? Patriots? I am both...can I profit from some alleged offense? Can I bring up legal action on behalf of Cecil the Lion? His premature death my be attributed to Viking animosity at the Lion mascot.
Geez! I was proud of that. I can't understand why and Indian would be offended.
According to many.polls I have seen, the vast majority of Indians are not offended by Indian nicknames.
It is white liberals who are offended by Indian nicknames. Since these liberals see themselves as elitist leaders of society, they have decided for us that we should be offended by Indian nicknames.
The same people who want to tell us how to.live our lives in so many other ways, also want to tell us what nicknames we are permitted to use for sports teams.
In some to many cases, the tribes have most definitely NOT been offended but the PC juggernaut rolled on nevertheless. I think that might be why FSU still gets to use the Seminoles.
So, doesn’t that suggest that the white liberals are the RACISTS because they are conducting ethnic cleansing of cultural symbols relating to Native Americans?
Yes it does suggest that the liberals are bigoted and prejudiced here.
How will they keep the fans from cheering however they want to???, are they really going to eject and arrest fans who cheer “go Sioux”??? Uttering the word “Sioux” will get you evicted from games?????
Yes, NCAA is corrupt and tyrannical - reminds me of “1984” and cults, such as Father Divine’s, where certain words and thought were forbidden.
The Washington Redskins would be more aptly named the Washington Kletocrats
The honky commie libs really do need to get a life.
Go Bison!
I've seen a number of polls taken with Amerinds showing pcts. of around 75-80 % approving of Indian nicknames for athletic teams. What lib reporters always do, of course, is find the Indians who are always angry.
