"The only thing your kids should be afraid of catching in the backyard is cooties," says Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell.
That's one of the reasons why the Obama administration's Clean Power Plan is "good for our children’s health," Burwell blogged last week [1].
She explained that the rule finalized this month by the Environmental Protection Agency will "leave the planet safer and healthier for our children and our grandchildren" by cutting carbon pollution from coal-fired plants.
Burwell then listed five reasons why the 1,560-page rule [2] will help future generations:

-- Because breathing outdoors shouldn't send kids to the hospital. (A reference to children with asthma.)
-- Because the outdoors should be for running, not runny noses. (She says climate change is lengthening the pollen/allery seasons.)
-- Because they will get enough smoke around campfires. (Burwell links increased frequency of wildfires to climate change.)
-- Because the only thing your kids should be afraid of catching in the backyard is cooties. (She warns that illnesses such as tick-borne Lyme disease will become more frequent "as increased carbon pollution warms our climate.")
-- Because you have enough to worry about without the threat of extreme weather events. ("A warming climate caused by carbon pollution could contribute to severe cold spells and heat waves that threaten the lives of countless children and their families living in poverty," Burwell wrote.)
I've taken pride in whatever ability I have to use the English language ... and I'm sometimes stumped for a descriptor to a question or situation (like something is an "anomoly" when trying to say "weird" or "out of place")
But for the life of me ... I don't think our language can adequately describe the people making policy and law in America ....
except, maybe, asshole.

That’s right! I was taught as a young lad that only girls had cooties...but you could get a cootie shot and be safe (poked by crossed fingers).
All of us since the early 50’s know that girls have cooties.

You rarely hear of cooties being passed in a church. You get cooties in public school all the time. And in college they have STD cooties trying to keep up with Hungover Buyer’s Regret Becomes Victimized Feminist Rape cooties. Fathers are looking for blacksmiths to put chastity codpieces on their sons. No I made that up. I hope.

Cooties could be a reference to head lice. Girls may have more of a tendency to get them since they typically have longer hair. They’re a lot more difficult to get rid of now because the EPA has banned so many insecticides.
I’d be more worried about my child getting West Nile Virus or meningitis by playing outside these days.
