I remember that one of the first things President Reagan did upon taking office is giving me a 15 percent pay raise. That helped a lot as Jimmy wasn’t paying us Staff Sergeants much at that time.

The instinct is to get mean here. People who suffer from dreaded diseases deserve sympathy. I remember, as a snot-nosed 20 year old kid, starting out as a Carter supporter. I was with the ‘don’t change horses in mid-stream’ crowd. But 1980 was a watershed year for me. That no-brained B-movie Hollywood actor slowly won me over with his common sense arguments. I voted against Carter (for Reagan, not Anderson), and have been a conservative ever since. Carter, as a man, has actually managed to get worse over the past 35 years, but I wish him and his family well in this, perhaps his last struggle.
