Indiana Enacts New Law Requiring Clinics to Offer Burial of Aborted Babies

A new Indiana law requires that abortion clinics dispose of fetal remains properly or give the mother a chance to bury her baby.

Gov. Mike Pence Monday held a ceremonial signing of an "aborted fetal remains" bill (SB 329), which establishes rules as to how abortion facilities must dispose of aborted babies and allows the pregnant woman to choose a different method at her own expense (burial or cremation).

According to testimony, the Indianapolis Planned Parenthood facility was disposing of aborted babies down a drain into the sewer system. The legislation was authored by Sen. Liz Brown (R-Fort Wayne).

The bill was enacted in April, well before revelations about Planned Parenthood's involvement in fetal organ and tissue trafficking.

“This law creates rules for how to appropriately dispose of aborted fetal remains,” Brown said. “Establishing standards brings respect to the woman, abortion staff and the aborted child. These standards require the facility to dispose of the baby’s remains properly, unless the woman chooses to bury her baby. Hoosiers want their government to ensure the bodies of aborted babies are treated with dignity and this law accomplishes that.”

“We’re thankful for Gov. Pence’s commitment to the pro-life cause and for the legislators who boldly passed these bills,” said Mike Fichter, president and CEO of Indiana Right to Life. “The aborted remains bill is especially timely, as Americans pause to consider what becomes of the tiny lives ended in abortion procedures. We believe the aborted remains bill provides dignity to the babies, their mothers and the abortion facility staff."

Pence also signed a prenatal diagnosis information bill (HEA 1093), which directs the ISDH to provide health care providers and parents with positive information regarding Down syndrome and other prenatal diagnoses. The information will provide parents with adequate medical information and information about support organizations. Several parents who testified in favor of this bill shared that the medical community often insists on abortion when there is a negative prenatal diagnosis.

"The positive prenatal diagnosis information bill ensures parents are empowered with medically-sound and helpful information when they receive a heartbreaking diagnosis of their unborn child," Fichter said. "Tragically, up to 90 percent of unborn babies diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted. We believe this information will let parents know they have options other than the decision to end their unborn child’s life.”

Both bills passed with bipartisan support.

ACTION ALERT

On Saturday, September 12, 2015, Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, Priests for Life and the Pro-Life Action League will co-sponsor the third annual National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children, calling on pro-life Americans to honor the gravesites of our aborted brothers and sisters.

Solemn prayer vigils will be conducted at these gravesites, of which there are 47 across the United States, as well as at dozens of other sites dedicated in memory of aborted children.

Why Visit the Gravesites of the Aborted Unborn?

When people become truly aware of the reality of abortion, they can more easily cut through the lies by which some try to justify it, and the natural apathy to which human nature is inclined. Even pro-life people are thrust into a higher level of commitment and activism.

Touching this reality happens in various ways: hearing a vivid description of the procedure, seeing diagrams of it or images of aborted children, hearing a woman's personal testimony of regret over her abortion.

This impact, whereby abortion no longer remains an abstraction, can be brought to an even more profound level when experienced during an event, such as the funeral for an aborted baby.

Tens of thousands of these children have been retrieved and buried at gravesites across our country. The stories of how they were killed, how they were found, and how they were buried, along with the pictures and videos that document those events, are powerful tools to awaken the consciences of our fellow citizens.

But while a funeral and burial for an aborted baby may be a relatively rare event, the opportunity to visit the burial places and recall how those children got there does not have to be rare—in fact, it shouldn't be.

Pro-lifers should be visiting these gravesites—and other memorial sites dedicated to aborted babies—as a regular part of their pro-life witness. That's what the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children is all about.

An Annual Event—and More

The first National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children was held in September 2013 on the 25th anniversay of the solemn burial of the earthly remains of some 1,500 abortion victims in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Over 100 memorial services were held across the United States, and it was clear this should become an annual event.

The Day of Remembrance will be held annually on the second Saturday in September. Dates for upcoming Days of Remembrance are as follows:

Pictures and videos from past Day of Remembrance memorial services can be found on the National Day of Remembrance Facebook page.

Pro-lifers are also encouraged to carry on the spiritual mission of the Day of Remembrance througout the year by visiting a gravesite of aborted children or other memorial site to offer prayers of mourning for the victims of abortion. Find the site nearest you here.

During your visit, you may wish to pray one of the following prayers prepared for the National Day of Remembrance:

By participating in the National Day of Remembrance, visiting these solemn memorial places at other times of the year, and spreading the word about this prayer campaign, you are helping to humanize our aborted brothers and sisters and deepening your own commitment to ending the injustice of abortion.

Good. I would say that Scotus couldn’t declare it unconstitutional, but after Obergefell, I’ve understood tyranny on a deeper level.

I wonder if the abortionists will have the gall to challenge this law in court.

What do they do with the dead babies? Please tell me they do not just throw them in the trash or just burn them.

This is the dumbest law ever. Go ahead and murder the baby but let the mother bury it? How about ending abortion.

This is a good idea. Many years ago, I had a miscarriage in my fifth month. It shocked me; & I couldn’t seem to think of anything much. - I believe I’ll see this baby some day. - Several months later, I gave birth to a Down Syndrome baby; he died 6 wks. later after surgery; of course, then we had a regular funeral for him. I’ll see him again, too.
Had a son who is now 49; he has a very high IQ, but is too willing to see the liberal side of most everything.

That a law should be necessary to bury legally murdered children....

Truly, as a nation, we are in free fall into the Pit.

I like your law better, but at least Indianian women will know, before they have the “procedure,” that they will have to check a box that says, “No, I don’t want a funeral for my baby.” Get it?

I have a cousin who had an abortion in the 70s. She regrets it to this day, I think almost haunted. At least this law acknowledges that fact that it’s a baby, not just tissue.

They sell the remains for cosmetics or research. Huge cash cow for Planned Parenthood.

Put her in contact with RACHEL'S VINEYARD. It's a healing ministry that works.

This is what you pass when the Supreme Court says you can't ban abortion.

Roe vs Wade, 1973

It has the good effect of making all the guilty parties acknowledge that their act of violence had a victim, who deserves at least to be buried and not treated like garbage.

Exactamundo.

Abortion is illegal under Indiana law. The Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade trumps state law, but the legislature can, at least, save some lives by reminding mothers that the victim of their abortion is a human being.

“How about ending abortion.”

True, but difficult to do quickly. This could start the process of challenging liberal beliefs. Many of those young pregnant girls are told that what is inside of them is not even a baby. This is a back door way to get the word to them that it is, in fact, a new, little life and will die and need a burial. Even kids understand the significance of a funeral. Maybe this can sneak past some liberal brainwashing, at least until the Left gets one of the numerous dark lords in some federal court to shut it down.
