RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (WPEC) A Riviera Beach police officer was videotaped confronting a disabled veteran for not looking "handicap" for parking in a disabled parking space.
U.S. Army combat veteran Isiah James, who has served nearly 10 years for our country, was absolutely shocked when a trip to a popular Riviera Beach drug store turned confrontational with the law.
James says he was issued a disabled person parking permit, and it was properly displayed in his vehicle the entire time.
During his deployment, James took fire and was hit with a blast from an IED, which left him medically discharged and permanently disabled, he told WPEC.
The cop in question was identified as Riviera Beach Sergeant Gary Wilson. Wilson is now being investigated by Internal Affairs following the heated confrontation with James.
The Riviera Beach Police Department issued this statement after seeing the video:
Many of you have expressed your concerns, passion, and support for Veterans as it relates to an incident involving one of our Police Officers and a Veteran. We, as an organization, share the same gratitude and respect for Veterans. We support Veterans and appreciate their commitment to serve our country. Although the department has not yet received an official statement regarding the incident in question, an Internal Affairs Investigation is already in effect. As a Department, we ask that you allow opportunity to complete the investigation. You can remain certain that the investigation will be thorough and transparent. The Office of the Chief of Police is always open, and takes seriously all customer service issues. However, we cannot support the use of profanity of any type on any of our social media sites. That aside, I've always been amused with this whole handicapped thing. I mean, people will park in handicapped spaces at a shopping mall and then go on inside the mall and walk for miles. It seems like doctors are just handing these stickers out like lollipops. Personally, I'd be embarrassed parking in one of those spaces unless I came out of my vehicle in a wheelchair or something.
Yes, you are quite right. But I see way more of the other. But that may just be due to the demographic makeup of my area.
Or you spend too much time at Walmart!
Ping.

Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted and you create a nation of law-breakers and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with.

Ye need ta git a kilt, laddie...
The cop has no authority to question the placard. He should be charged with felony menacing.
The problem is the parking spots get filled and then people who really need the spaces have no where to go. My mother uses a walker and can barely walk 100 feet without a rest. More than once the handicap spaces are all full and then we are out of luck.
My mother is in a wheel chair and I drive her around shopping and get her in and out of the car and I don't mind pushing the wheelchair the extra distance but often the handicap spot is better access for helping her into the wheelchair and she is entitled to it and is registered with the license plate and all, but we often can't use the designated spots because someone in a hurry is obviously using some relative or friend's sticker. See it all the time. All the time.

Aye, I would but it's a bit drafty in the nether regions.

...goes around checking all these parking spaces against a list of authorization codes. If they find a faker, they call the police to come and issue a ticket. Are they all too old to be Hall Monitors at a local Elementary School?
Also, he OBVIOUSLY has an inferiority complex about his position relative to soldiers. As well he should. There is no positive comparison.
That dude needs multiple chin straps.
