In a blog posted on Friday on the U.S. Department of Agricultures website, the department boasts that food stamp spending at U.S. farmers markets has increased nearly six-fold since 2008.
National SNAP redemptions at those outlets totaled $18.8 million during fiscal year 2014 (Oct. 1 to Sept. 30), a nearly six-fold increase since 2008, the blog states, calling the increase a win-win for all. (SNAP is the acronym for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the food stamp program.) [ ]
Calling food stamp payment at farmers markets a top priority for the USDA, the department is providing free wireless equipment to qualifying farmers and farmers markets, said the department.

Idiots. Shutter the USDA!!
“Win-win”? For whom? Not for the American people.
Local rural people here actually have benefited from this. The producers and users both.
Of course, food stamps are still the scam they’ve always been.
Especially since they stared selling whiskey....................
No, it’s not a win—it’s offensive. Poor average Americans can’t afford the boutique prices of premium produce from the modern farmer’s market—but they are funding it for food stamps recipients!
I have seen signs at my local about accepting ebt cards. Since fresh eggs cost $10 for a dozen, even my money doesn’t go too far.
RE>USDA, the department is providing free wireless equipment to qualifying farmers and farmers markets
Hmmm Why does the word “qualifying” scare me...does this mean one has to be a Democratic campaign contributor?
Only a matter of time until leftists and the USDA try to shut down Farmers Markets
Could have something to do with the fact that this is RELENTLESSLY ADVERTISED at virtually every Farmers’ Market that springs up all over town, ALL SUMMER LONG!
free??
Those IPhone credit card scanners take something like 3%, I can only imagine what the taxpayers are losing with that thing
Since when is an addiction a “benefit”?
so, the scam isn’t just for Walmart, Kroger and Giant Eagle anymore?
A vendor at a farmer’s market near me makes pricey desserts.
She refused to take a SNAP card for her desserts saying the cards should be used for more essential foods.
The farmer’s market people kicked her out because of her “discriminitory” action.
.
I doubt that this is helping most of the people in the beloved demographics, as they are mostly clustered in the inner cities. I’m sure there are some rural beloveds being helped by this, however.
Our farmers market secured a grant from USDA to double your snap bennies when you shop there.
Exactly.
The intent of this is to hide that Food Stamps are a gift to big donors.
I caught an email in my inbox from one of many organizations on which I somehow are on their ‘list’ that was touting something NOT mentioned in the OP article:
SNAP-matching at Farmers Markets

THIS is why SNAP is up at Farmers Markets (duh, right? And WE end up paying for it)
fresh eggs cost $10 for a dozen,

What’s special about those eggs? I don’t pay anywhere near that much for eggs.
I didn’t your post due to that persistent thread display issue.
It’s not just your Farmers Mkt...it’s all over the country.
