Retired pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson is warning Donald Trump that a third party run could do more than just put Hillary Clinton in the White House. Carson cautioned the billionaire businessman than an independent presidential bid would tilt the balance of the Supreme Court in a liberal direction for generations.
"If he [Donald Trump] decides to run a third party campaign, he basically will be giving the election to the progressives who will get two or three Supreme Court picks," Carson told Fox News host Megyn Kelly Friday.
Over the past decade numerous split decisions reveal the replacement of even one justice could tip the balance of power on the court. By 2020, four Supreme Court justices will be in their 80s, meaning the next president will play a pivotal role in shaping the future trajectory of the High Court.
Reliably liberal justice. Ruth Bader Ginsberg is an 82-year-old pancreatic cancer survivor; conservative mainstay Antonin Scalia is slightly younger at 79. Clinton appointee Stephen Breyer is 76 years old...
Should Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton win the White House and replace Ginsberg and Breyer, along with either Kennedy or Scalia, she could secure a very liberal voting bloc in which none of the justices were born before 1954. ...

Then my advice to these people is to play a straight election and knock off the BS attempts at trying to hound him out of the race because you don’t like him.
You don’t have a right to our votes and the GOPers haven’t demonstrated an ability to even get picking judges right anyway.
Dr. Carson is getting ahead of himself, as is Carly Fiorina. Just when he is gaining some momentum is not the time to start criticizing and issuing warning to Trump.
Take a look at how well trashing Trump worked for Perry and Graham, and then present your own stances on the issues and forget about Trump, and don’t be lured into discussing him by newsreaders with personal agendas.
It’s not just the Supreme Court, it’s the lower federal courts as well.
The president appoints judges to all of the federal courts.
As of today, about 1/3 of judges in all of the federal courts have been appointed by Obama. Though they are appointed for life, there are always retirements and resignations creating lower federal court vacancies.
The Supreme Court decides only a small minority of cases brought before federal courts. Most are settled at lower levels, and by having liberal radical judges in the lower courts, this means that liberal interpretations of law will become established legal precedent as time goes on. If a Democrat is elected president in 2016, that trend will only accelerate.
This is a tough issue. Liberal judges stay liberal in their times on the bench. But we’ve seen some conservative judges become more liberal, or surprisingly vote with the liberals in some key cases.
Yeah, lets have a third party run from a blowhard who (according to Brit Hume) said that the audience at the debate didn’t like him very well. Crybaby.
And just give the whole nation lock stock and barrel to Hillary with a third-party run.
Not smart at all what you saying here.
We cannot afford to have conservatives pitch a fit because they want everything in the universe their way this election and if not, they are willing to give the whole nation’s future to Hillary.
Don’t worry about it Dr. Carson. Trump will have the GOP nomination locked up before the GOPe knows what hit them. It won’t be necessary to go third party.
Both Bushes had the opportunity to flip the court conservative, if either had wanted to do that.
Theoretically the size of the Supreme Court can be increased, but realistically, I think it would be a political molotov cocktail if either party tried to do this.
So you, like some here, are ready to pitch a fit this election cycle and support a third party run and hand the whole nation’s future to Hillary?
Madness....
A madness that is raging through parts of the GOP right now and in some Republican voters.
This is madness, beyond even Bush Jr’s picks for SCOTUS (Roberts).
You think Roberts is bad (Bush Jr’s pick)?
You aint seen nothing yet if Hillary picks em’.
Maybe we need to stop appointing lawyers. They don’t seem to be able to understand plain English.
The Right Wing MUST do this.
When an outsider takes the WH it should be done in the first 100 days.
FDR threatened to do it but in response the “Justices” started seeing things his way so he backed off and it never happened.
This SCOTUS needs to be fixed.
A lot of people need to realize if Trump decides to go 3rd party, always a possibility especially if they keep pulling stupid crap like the disinvite from the Red State Convention, a 3rd party run does not automatically throw the election to Hillary.
1. Hillary is sliding into oblivion, if you haven’t noticed. Right now she’s headed into a courtroom to face the possibility of perjury charges, the outcome of that court appointment might have a detrimental affect on her run for prez, even if she’s not in jail before the day’s over. Also, her support is dwindling almost daily, and unfavorable ratings increasing almost daily. In short, people just don’t trust her, more of them all the time.
2. Trump is pulling a lot of votes from both Democrats and Independents. This is not a typical situation involving a typical politician. Trump threw the rule book out the door before he even started. You can’t predict what will happen based on what you know from previous elections. That’s why all the stuffed suits who have said Trump is doomed have been proven wrong repeatedly. His initial announcement comments didn’t do it, McCain comments didn’t do it...in fact every time he’s been attacked he has gotten more popularity out of it.
Watch and see, the debate may not have gone as well as many of us would have liked, the moderators were far from fair, and did everything they could to bring Trump down, and he will still come out ahead, watch the polls next week and see.
Now think about that 3rd party run idea. I’m already seeing in the comments section of news websites, people saying this might be their first time to vote Republican. Democrats saying they might vote for Trump. Many Republicans or conservatives saying they support either Trump or Cruz or both.
I think the 3rd party idea is not a deal breaker. If Trump does it, I think he can pull it off. The way things are going, I see a good chance of a 3rd party run and I don’t blame him at all. The GOP establishment doesn’t seem to be listening. They tried to shut him down in the debates, pulled the invite to this convention, what’s next?
But don’t be so pessimistic about the 3rd party run idea. Remember, Trump has a reputation for doing what he says he will do. He’s also getting a ton of attention with the public, and I think a lot of people who would normally be paying no attention to the presidential race are already taking notice. People telling their friends what’s going on, they start watching...he’s pulling democrats and independents, and I’m pretty sure he’s getting the attention of people who normally barely even notice the elections.
So we’d better start being a lot more optimistic about a 3rd party option. I think he can do it, if he chooses to try.
Trump/Cruz Independent...better think about that...I say if he does, support the hell out of it. If we don’t, it’s sure to flop.
For a brain surgeon, Dr. Carson’s eyes don’t seem to work too well. Remind us all again which party picked Roberts, Souter and Kennedy.
To be fair, Alito has been Rick solid.
Trump is a liberal. Never trust a liberal.
Nope. People, and in particular, millennials, are clamoring for a leader, someone who doesn’t mince words. So many of them watched Trump as the undisputed authority on his TV show and grew to admire him for his strong leadership. From a marketing standpoint, he created a brand for himself that is consistent with his conduct in is campaign and people already know it and love it. The rest of the status-quo lightweights are conducting themselves as metrosexually as possible and here’s this guy, not afraid to speak his mind, state his views and fight back.
The great Gen. Patton was spot on when he said that “...traditionally, Americans love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle... Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser!” Which status-quo republican candidate is posturing themselves as a winner? NONE! They’re simply echoing the PC mantra and political speak of a withering generation. I think the Don is articulating the frustration people have been forced to stuff regarding PC, the freedom to speak one’s mind and to call out BS when it’s flailing in your face.
Given the rate at which traditions and conventional thinking are being superseded these days, Trump running as a third party candidate might suit millennials on both sides of the spectrum very well. This coming-of-age and influential demographic are highly open to change. And, people inside and outside of that demographic are sick of ineffectual democrats and republicans. Trump’s third party run, should it come to pass may be the next evolutionary step in American politics and the highly dysfunctional (and traitorous!) republican party could go the way of the dinosaur. And we still preserve the two party system. Death to the RINOsaurs!
I will not vote for anyone unwilling to uphold the rule of law. It’s up to the candidates to meet that very low standard.
A ¡Yeb! nomination is giving the election to Hillary.
Talk to the RNC. That’s who is electing Hillary.
Excellent point!
Also consider that low-information patriots have already had three election cycles to elect a 2/3 Senate majority that would be willing to work with the House to remove activist justices from the bench, but have failed to do so. In fact, hypothetically speaking, the whole corrupt Senate could have been replaced by this time.
I wish that the theme of the 16 elections was to repeal the 17th Amendment.
It doesn’t matter if Trump runs, as the GOP nominee, or as an Independent.
The Republicans are not going to win the White House.
And they will just barely hold on to a majority in the Senate.
Thirty years of massive LEGAL immigration, and the Socialist-Conservative-Birth-Death Rate, have pushed the political math permanently in favor of American Socialists.
In 2016, if the Democrats can turn out their core voting groups, they will win legally, and they will win easily.
Yeah he should leave the trashing of Trump to me. And Trump as crony capitalist, lover of single payer healthcare and advocate of government taking property to give to private citizens with deeper pockets is an easy target
All mostly true. But thanks to Electoral College, negative median income growth and ISIS Republicans have a shot at winning this national election though the long term outlook is bleak.
