Call it the Three Presidents Crew.
In a historic game of naval musical chairs, sailors from San Diegos aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan will serve on three different flattops over the next six months.
The Navy is saving $41 million by doing a massive, complicated crew swap involving 9,000 sailors and the carriers George Washington and Theodore Roosevelt, in addition to the Reagan.
At the end, the U.S. Navy will have a new face in Asia, and an American aircraft carrier will enter a mid-life nuclear overhaul that was at one time uncertain.
Also, San Diego will have a new hull number on its skyline CVN 71, affectionately known as The Big Stick as an homage to the 26th U.S. president, namesake Theodore Roosevelt.
Its the first time ever that three of the Navys 10 active-duty carriers have changed home ports all at once.
-snip-
This carrier roulette is especially noteworthy because -- for the first time since 2007 -- no U.S. aircraft carrier will be on duty in the Persian Gulf for up to two months this fall.
The timing is significant in geopolitics.

“All this complication and pull-back from hotspots to save $41 million?”
Nobody will ever convince me that at minimum, half that money will be spent on administrative googah to pull this off. Plus as you said, it’s nothing.
This obamanation weakens America’s ability to project power in the ME, AND hangs our ME allies out to dry at a critical time when ISIS and Iran are poised to strike AND strengthens Iran’s stature and ability AND emboldens radical islam AND opens Israel to horrific attack.
It serves ALL FIVE of obama’s goals.
Usually an action or failure to act only accomplishes two or three of his driving goals.
How does “save” $41 million... or is that government math
time for a vacation or two
that is frightening.
Hey, if I can’t sleep, there’s no reason you should be able to sleep!

that’s fair!
The Air Force did something similar in 1976 with Operation Ready Switch, where the F-111Fs from Mtn. Home AFB, ID were moved to Lakenheath AFB, England, Lakenheath’s F-4s went to Nellis AFB, NV, and Nellis’ F-111As went to Mtn. Home.
When the Nimitz went from the Med to the Persian Gulf during the hostage crisis she went around Africa. Going through the Suez Canal seemed like a good setup for a target.
Clever.
A move to put the newest and most up-to-date carrier near any future Chinese action?
Shock! horror! San Diego is a military target. Who knew?
I am resurrecting this post.
According to this article, there will be two months this fall with no US carrier on duty in the Persian Gulf.
It is now just barely fall. I don’t know if their is currently a US carrier on duty in the Persian Gulf or not. I will try to find out. Do any freepers know of the current status of US carriers in the Persian Gulf?
I am sure Putin is aware of all US aircraft carrier movements.
CVN 71. T. Roosevelt in Persian Gulf.
Thank you.
Thank you.
