Call it the Three Presidents Crew.
In a historic game of naval musical chairs, sailors from San Diegos aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan will serve on three different flattops over the next six months.
The Navy is saving $41 million by doing a massive, complicated crew swap involving 9,000 sailors and the carriers George Washington and Theodore Roosevelt, in addition to the Reagan.
At the end, the U.S. Navy will have a new face in Asia, and an American aircraft carrier will enter a mid-life nuclear overhaul that was at one time uncertain.
Also, San Diego will have a new hull number on its skyline CVN 71, affectionately known as The Big Stick as an homage to the 26th U.S. president, namesake Theodore Roosevelt.
Its the first time ever that three of the Navys 10 active-duty carriers have changed home ports all at once.
-snip-
This carrier roulette is especially noteworthy because -- for the first time since 2007 -- no U.S. aircraft carrier will be on duty in the Persian Gulf for up to two months this fall.
The timing is significant in geopolitics.

Fine time for
- Iran to promptly initiate its nuclear agreement exit strategy (laid out plainly in said agreement)
- Israel to say “it’s time” and light up some sites

All this complication and pull-back from hotspots to save $41 million? We borrow that much just to make interest payments on the debt EVERY 40 MINUTES. We are putting global security at risk and making San Diego a bullseye for THAT?
My thoughts were along the same lines.
Why would you have a carrier in the Persian Gulf when the Israelis are going to pick a fight with Iran? The last thing you need is a big target sitting there with relatively little room to maneuver.
William the Impeached famously said, “My first question in any crisis is, ‘Where are the carriers?’”
The positions of the big ships are the first best indicators of national intent.
And what do we think are the intentions of the illegitimate, bisexual, Marxist Kenyan Muslim Usurper?
Exactly
I served on board 2 carriers: Ranger and Kennedy. No idea what or why this is happening.
Obama is leaving Israel vulnerable.
If something happens, our response could take months.
Nope.
obama is putting global security at risk and making San Diego a bullseye for THAT.
EVERYTHING obama does either:
a) Weakens America/AmericansThere are NO counter examples.
b) Distances America's allies
c) Strengthens America's enemies
d) Serves Islam
e) Harms Israel
Or some combination of the above.
I have no doubt that Israel can fend for itself.
See posts #11 & 12.
And I have no doubt that with America out of the picture, Israel will have to!
your point is?
And add all those accommodations for the new types of sexes soon to be in the services.

No carrier in the Persian Gulf part of the “deal” with Iran? My guess is yes.
Two ship swaps are not that uncommon when you have a ship homeported in Japan being replaced with one from the states. In addition to cutting the expenses of moving dependents it also doesn't disrupt their lives with a global move. So there are morale benefits.
A three ship swap is a bit more unusual.
I didn’t know that, Thank you.
