ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Two employees of an Alaska backcountry lodge startled an adult grizzly bear while running on a trail in Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. The bear stepped out of thick brush and mauled one woman while the other ran for help.
Gabriele Markel, 20, was recovering Wednesday at an Anchorage hospital. Her wounds, which authorities described as bites and scratches on her head, back and arm, weren't considered life-threatening. She was upgraded to good condition from fair on Wednesday, authorities said.
Markel and a co-worker, Kaitlyn Haley, 26, of California, were running Tuesday afternoon on the Cottonwood Creek Trail near Upper Skilak Lake. They were about three-quarters of a mile from the lodge when the mauling happened.

Just goes to prove the old saying, "You don't have to be able to run faster than the bear...."
You know the rest.
Sadly, the first thing that came to my mind as well...
Good grief! Those women knew there were bears there what were they thinking?
Never jog in Alaska without your 454 survival revolver.
Wilderness Survival Tip # 433: Always hike with a fatso with a foot problem.
Ursus horribilis. Famous last words; “I love you bear.”
I guess we can assume the bear was not hungry and was simply startled. If an adult grizzly wanted to kill her, she would be dead.
LOL!
Now that I think about it this bear merely wanted to put the bite on the woman.
“Two employees of an Alaska backcountry lodge”
AND they were employees of the lodge. You think they didn’t know their surroundings? Plus, one left the other to die. Some friend...
Hello and welcome to Alaska! Remember that here, everywhere is bear and moose country! Enjoy!
I guess there were no Hollywood “kick ass” women to teach that barr a lesson.
With these black bears around here, toss a couple of candy bars into the woods and they’ll be far more interested in that than in you.
Grizzlies, not so much I reckon.
Pro 2nd ammendment bump on that!
Joggers are fast food for bears in AK. Bike riders are meals on wheels.
You don’t want to move fast in bear country..you can get mixed up real easily between a Mom and her Cubs. Move slowly and make noise so the bears have a chance to clear out. Then carry a 45..just in case.
I’m surprised the jogger’s partner didn’t go off a safe distance and start filming the mauling so he could get “Hits” on UTube.
Wonder what would have happened if they had startled Cecil the lion. If he maimed or killed her would he be as popular?
Wow! I love it! Perfect load carrying bug out buggy!
