Chris Wallace, moderator of the first GOP debate, plans ‘some doozies’
Washington Post ^ | 8/4/15 | Krissah Thompson

Chris Wallace tapped the black three-ring binder resting on the corner of his desk. “I’ve got some doozies in there,” he said, eyebrow raised provocatively.

The unlabeled binder holds the veteran Fox News anchor’s questions for Thursday’s Republican primary debate, for which he will serve as a moderator. Clamped inside it are newspaper clippings, memos to his researcher and outlines of what the hodgepodge of presidential candidates vying to top the GOP field have been saying about the issues and about each other.

It has become a primary-season ritual for Wallace, a fixture at Fox News for more than a decade, to challenge and goad the packed roster of Republican candidates. But this debate in Cleveland, the first of the 2016 election season, may be in a league of its own.

Aside from what Wallace calls the “Trump factor” — Donald Trump, the unpredictable tycoon whose off-the-cuff quips and slams have been roiling the GOP — there’s the unwieldy size of the field. Of the 17 declared candidates, Fox will allow only the top 10, as determined by five of the most recent national polls, into Thursday’s debate.

“There’s so doggone many,” said Wallace, 67, sitting at his desk in Fox’s Washington bureau. The decision to pack the stage was made above his pay grade, he adds. “Will [the debate] be as great as it would be if there were three or four candidates? No. But it’s clear from the polls, people are far from decided.”

Oh I think he will change course if they aren’t fair with him...he’s already shown he will do so and generally in such a way they don’t expect, but think they do.

Look we already know the debates are going to be the most corrupt, controlled and choreographed in U.S. history.

You don’t put a candidate’s opponents up to be moderators. Those people should be completely neutral.

This is like walking into court as a defendant and seeing the prosecutors wife is the judge.

This is as corrupt as it gets.

Wallace won’t care even if they do shut hi up....in his eyes he has control and will move on according to what he wants....he doesn’t faze easily and will expect backlash, even from the audiance. It’s all about giving a good show for the ratings.

It’s beginning to look like this is all about Fox and not the candidates, rather the candidates are simply a prop in the Fox show.

This could seen coming since 6/16/2015.

Trumps two biggest opponents are the corrupt lying MSM and career politicians in D.C.?

This is Mad Magazine material.

Trump’s best answer to a gotcha question is

“You expect me to waste my 3 minutes of debate time on a stupid question like that!?”

Chrissie will not ask JEB! any tough questions. He is a useless fool who does what he is told by Ailes and Murdoch.

If not for his last name, he would be cleaning toilets in the Diarrhea Ward.

Another biased WaPo piece that enumerates how Trump has been “attacking” his opponents, without mention that he’s only counterpunched after he’s been attacked first.

Good catch there Lurker...

LOL - the nice thing about Trump is he might actually say something like that in response to a 'gotcha' (waste of time) question...

A couple of times I watched Megyn Kelly recently she was absolutely giddy talking about debate planning meetings where they were coming up with their questions.

Fox could really alienate a lot of people if they use this debate to try and damage some candidates. Gotcha questions and questions concerning obscure facts have no real place in this sort of debate, and even the supposedly conservative network will probably play the same games as the leftist.

I missed that one... thanks for sharing caww...

I’ve taken to enjoying Wallace... here’s hoping he adds light to the issues ... not just heat.

....”This is Mad Magazine material”....

Well when someone like Cruz and Trump attempt to bring down a governmental system of mass corruption, with numerous tentacles who benefit greatly financially, it's like going after the Costa Nostra....bets will be called in to stop them across the spectrum.

So this is what debates have turned into. Gotcha moments. I hope Trump has a book on the moderators.

Rupert seems to be changing his tune, lately. Sent a recent tweet actually acknowledging Trumps high numbers. Not sure what to make of it. But, Trump, in his usual wisdom commented back something about this being a better tone. Lol. We’ll see.

If Trump, or any other candidate, think Wallace is asking a stupid question they should all agree to pass to the next one......

Did you hear the dumb question they gave Santorum last night?....”What woman would you put on a dollar bill”?

How humiliating for Santorum that they would do just that.

I just tweeted it to him... but I’m certain he’s already thought of that response.

If he delivered the line with the right timing, inflection and facial expression it would bring the house down.

It’s VERY humorous given the number of debaters... not so funny as “I will not exploit my opponents youth and inexperience” I have tried to come up with a quip the equal of that Reagan line but I can’t seem to do it.
