Are we on the threshold of a United States of Europe?

Four days ago, French President François Hollande declared his in-principle commitment to the creation of a “euro government, with the addition of a specific budget and a parliament to ensure democratic control.”

This is more an opening gambit in a debate about the terms of putative federalization (a term Hollande was careful to avoid), than a statement of French commitment to it at all costs.

If some form of federalization comes about, it will not be because the French especially desire it, but because the logic of the Euro ultimately demands it. […]

Germany is also in a better position to dictate the kind of federalism the Eurozone might adopt. Though German taxpayers have become more exposed to other Eurozone members’ debts, Berlin has put that money to good effect, using it to extend its reach over afflicted countries’ fiscal affairs. […]

For Berlin, then, the ideal form of European political and fiscal union would offer indirect, but reliable, control over the fiscal policies of other Eurozone members to ensure their “competitiveness” and the euro’s long-term stability, but the retention of national control over those issues that underpin Germany’s position as Europe’s paramount power. …

I wish some people would not continue to conflate federalism and imperialism.

Funny, wasn’t the EU supposed to be that already?

No. We’re talking next level, the effective end of national sovereignty.

We’re headed that way if the American people don’t man up and tell the UN to get the hell out of our country. The U.S. Constitution does not say anything about having a UN to help govern the country.

They're going to "re-introduce" the EU.
It's the EU with a "reset" button.
It's the EU re-mixed.

This is what the left does. Float some grandiose plan with all kinds of promises. Then when it flops completely, make tons of excuses and "re-introduce" it.

They've been doing this for about 250 years, since the French Revolution, or maybe earlier. The LIVs never wise up. Or maybe they do, but are replaced by younger LIVs.

No, but... the US Constitution did have a means to effectively amend it, putting it on a par with treaties and then offering a flimsy way of ratifying them that includes by voice vote of a bare quorum. IOW, the Constitution makes it possible for 34 Senators to dictate the Supreme Law of the Land. That codex of international law has infested federal statutes to a massive degree ever since the creation of the UN, by treaty as enforced in Federal courts.

The EU is not working, so double down on what doesn’t work? Not good. Possible Biblical implications.

putative federalization

I did a quick glance and it came out "pulverization" for me.

No, but guess who can be on the hook for paying "our fair share" to support those effing Spanikopita-eaters? You and me, brother!

lol at French politicians willing to take a massive step down in stature. Or any other sovereign nation. Thats not even counting all the citizens, people to whom being French or Italian mean something.

Only as part of a Greater Germania, or a New Russian Co-federation. Germans could smack some fiscal sense into Greece.

Sure, have social marketeers “smack some fiscal sense” into anyone, really? The terms of the loans (not bailouts) are so twisted as to prevent Greece from being able to pay them back. How does it make sense to cut back on social programs in concert with raising taxes to the point where jobs can’t be created?
