I'm glad I read through all of the responses before posting again, I was about to get into all of this myself; thank you for posting it. My only quibble would be that the four-chord progression is also baked into twelve-bar blues, which was being sung in the rural South long before anyone would have heard of Solomon Linda; it's either something more indigenous to African music in general (most slaves came from west Africa, far fewer from Angola and other southern African areas), or simply something hard-wired into the musical experience.
