I hated how with Windows XP on a laptop, Microsoft often changed the shutdown button to "install updates and shut down" without you knowing if you didn't look very closely. I'd end up waiting 20 minutes to shut down my laptop, often at inopportune moments. A laptop, after is a portable device, and often has to be transported ...

I have one win 7 desktop that has a broken updater. I suspect it was one of those updates that caused this to happen (months ago). Tried every repair, tried retail install disk, cannot download new disk to burn (win7 is no longer available?), have to call ms again and allow them to control pc to get it fixed.
But with win 10 coming out, I do want it fixed.
That said, my biggest concern is what will happen if any of these updated from win 7 or 8 puters need restoring at some time in the future. Our restore disks are 7 or 8 - will it be the same story - no longer supported?

Thanks for posting.. We were looking at a desktop. I had to install Unbuntu after Windows ate my laptop. Tim Cook and his products are out after he opened his big mouth.
Wow.. Guess I could go with Linux, but is that any better?

Our computer is 7 yrs old, does that mean it will automatically install Win 10? Most of my programs won’t work on a newer version.
Hubby’s laptop has Win 8 and XP so he can run an older version of auto cad for the family tree.

Windows 7 is perfectly fine for me. I’ll wait awhile before installing 10.
As for automatic updates being mandatory . . .
WHY, OH WHY MUST MICROSOFT CONTROL EVERY ASPECT OF OUR COMPUTER LIVES???

Is the problem Windows 10,or is the problem NVIDIA's last two attempts at rolling out a working driver for Windows 10 has failed?
It's both. Forcing an update before a vendor can get their drives updated and pushed out is the problem.
I'm running the last bits of the Windows 10 Technical Preview and have received TWO driver updates from NVIDIA --- neither has worked with my multi-monitor (3..) setup.
So my Windows 10 box is sitting there with three monitors attahed with only one working properly.
Not helpful at all. Blame both Microsoft and NVIDIA for the problem.
