Senate conservatives couldnt stop a vote on the Export-Import bank. So theyre going to try to force a vote on Obamacare instead.
Conservative firebrand Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) announced on Friday that he plans to use a complicated procedural maneuver known as the nuclear option to repeal the Affordable Care Act with just 51 votes.
Democrats famously used the strategy in 2013 to break a Republican blockade of President Obamas nominees to fill judicial openings. Now Lee wants to use the partisan procedure get rid of Obamacare.
Its unclear whether Lees gambit will work but if it does, there are likely 51 senators who would vote to repeal Obamas signature domestic achievement. The issue is whether such language can get a vote on the Senate floor to begin with.
Heres where things get complicated.

2012 - Come on guys. We can’t kill it. Not now. Let’s wait until we control the Senate. Then we can really do what we want. The important thing is that you keep voting Republican.
2015 - Come on guys. We can’t kill it. Not now. Let’s wait until we control the White House. Then we can really do what we want. The important thing is that you keep voting Republican.
2017 - Come on guys. We can’t kill it. Not now. We have just won a big election and built up too much good will with the American people. We don’t want to loose it. Let’s get some other stuff done first then we will get to that. The important thing is that you keep voting Republican.
2019 - Come on guys. Now that we don’t control Congress anymore you need to vote for more Republicans so we can finally kill it.
That depends on who sits in the chair at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue as President. We gave the House and Senate their majorities - so what difference did it make?
You make a very good point FRiend
———Lee gets to tell his supporters that hes responsible——
and then announce he’s running for president
Agreed. I want that terrible law repealed, but I want it gone forever, not just a teasing game of make-believe followed by a veto.
Apples and Oranges. Drop me a line when your heading to the WH with your tactical rifle.
Not sure if you have heard of it, but there is something called a VETO. All presidents have it. And until we remove the communists from the WH, any legislation to repeal SCOTUS-care is just pissing into a headwind and advertising our political impotence.
“A successful vote to repeal before January 2017 will be vetoed and would be simply a symbolic gesture.”
A real opposition party would relish the opportunity to force their opponents to take a vote on an issue highly unpopular with the people. A real opposition party would then use that vote as a hammer in the next election.
A fake opposition party declines to put its opponents on the spot.
Symbolic gestures can sometimes be extremely powerful and set the stage for real action.
The difference is who wields the Veto.
Missing? The States, whom could quash 99% of what’s coming out of D.C. using the 9th and 10th (and holding any/all $$ in escrow).
Course, I’m talking when we HAD a Republic...
Mike Lee= good
Orrin Hatch = used to be good, has succumbed to Washington lobbyist temptations. Another poster boy for term limits.
Mike Lee is honorable. He and Cruz have been fighting McConnell for several years.
That’s the durn truth.
The GOPe wants Obamacare, because the US COC want Obamacare.
If a vote along party lines with defectors could well override a veto if this were proposed, and even if it didn’t, the issue would be a club to beat the dems and GOPe with.
The only question worth asking is if Mike Lee is GOPe or not.
Cruz calling McConnell out as the back-stabbing liar he is should help some make up their minds about who they want to be related to in the Public Eye. Some say Cruz hasn’t the experience and I say he has something more important - brains and determination.
yep
On the other hand, the vote will not only force Democrats to take a position, it will force Republicans to stand up and be counted --- and that may be the primary benefit.
Two months ago the Republicans were talking about plans to keep Obamacare going for a while if the Supreme Court struck it down. Now we’re supposed to believe that the Republicans are willing to repeal it and end it immediately?
The dems have pretty much taken their position. Don’t expect them to rally for the truth ever! But, yes, this will be telling for the repub’icans. Huston never showed at the Alamo and some very brave patriots were lost. I’m guessing the senator from Kentucky will put off calling for reinforcements as well.
