An amusing short story by Lord Dunsany. A ghost haunts a watchtower in southern France. The ghost cannot rest because it needs to watch for the approach of the Saracens. The narrator tries to assure the ghost that those wars happened centuries ago. It’s safe to rest now. The Saracens are not coming.
“Oh, no”, the ghost says. “The Saracens are always coming.”
The story was written probbaly around 1920 or so.
