Former San Francisco Mayor Art Agnos makes no apologies for signing the ordinance in 1989 that established his city as a sanctuary.
We had refugees seeking asylum from right-wing death squads, Agnos told me by phone.
Catholic clergy urged Agnos to protect people trying to escape dirty wars in Central America in the 1980s. The Board of Supervisors approved the ordinance unanimously. Later mayors expanded on the concept.
All that has flooded to the fore since July 1 when a bullet pierced Kathryn Steinles aorta, as the 32-year-old woman walked with her father along the San Francisco waterfront at Pier 14.
Police arrested Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez, an undocumented immigrant who had been deported five times before. Donald Trump, Bill OReilly and other conservative bloviators are playing the part of demagogue, blaming San Franciscos liberal sanctuary policy for Steinles sad death. Clearly, San Francisco authorities should not have granted Sanchez sanctuary.

Bizarre, if you can stomach the read.
Nary a mention of deportation and whether the Feds should have nuked this guy long ago.
It's more about who can be more compassionate. I sh!t you not.
I want Agnos to tell us how many illegals have been killed by "right-wing death squads". Ever.
Could someone please explain tome exactly on what planet does an Elected County Sheriff fall beneath the power of an inferior municipality??
Single governmental structure.
But they keep saying it is a CITY Ordinance, not a County one.
There's only ONE city in San Francisco County.
There's also only one governmental entity.
They are the same.
It's because they're weirdos.
Right wing death squads would be a welcome relief from the grab your ankles libtards.
WOW, that’s wierd, no wonder they are so screwed up.
Don’t they have a pd and so. Usually the sheriff runs the county jails
