If somebody joins the military, they learn important things like:
Be to work on time.
Don’t show up to work drunk.
Take care of your personal hygiene.
Take care of your equipment.
If somebody gets food stamps, they learn important things like:
I don’t have to work!

My father was Air Force & stationed there. The islands may have strategic value. On the other hand, they are inhabited by those with a very left-wing mindset. Or those who want to resurrect the Hawaiian monarchy. Neither of which benefits those of us who want constitutional republican government.
