Yeah, this sounds like someone pulling a CYA.
Could they have ran the check after the shooting just to make them be able to say, “The system worked?”

Given this is the FBI, I’d want to see real, I could touch it, proof.

Agreed. Going to be interesting to see how this turns out.

ABC News: The FBI says its background-check system failed, allowing the man who opened fire inside a South Carolina church last month to purchase the gun he used in the rampage.

Speaking to a small group of reporters in Washington today, FBI Director James Comey said 21-year-old Dylann Roof of Lexington, South Carolina, should not have been able to buy the weapon.

Oh my, how fun to learn details such as these following an abhorrent gun crime which politicians use to scream for stricter laws. Such as Gamil Gharbi, who murdered 14 women at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal in 1989, was given a Firearms Acquisition Certificate by a Montreal police department firearms officer who apparently failed to do the required background check on him even though he was turned down by the Canadian Armed Forces for mental instability or that the Tech 9 handgun used by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold was bought for them by the son of a local gun control crusader or that Klebold told his liberal anti-gun parents of his opposition to concealed handgun carry laws or that Patrick Purdy was able to clear California background checks for firearms purchases before his 1989 rampage in Stockton because he had had his charges for various gun crimes plea bargained away.

I don’t know of any commercial gun seller who would sell a gun that 1) had trigger questions on the 4473 answered affirmatively, or 2) didn’t get back a confirmation number from the NICS hotline on a clean background check.

Frankly, I think the Director is either lying of falsely implying they (NICS) gave to the go-ahead.

“If NICS does NOT deny him, the FFL is under obligation to release the firearm to the person that filled out the Form 4473.”

I guess it depends on state law, because here in California (where we are in the process of getting rid of the 10 day waiting period for a HG) the dealer may not release a gun to a customer until they get a response on the 4473 from the State DOJ. This is the supposed hang up on dispensing with the ten day waiting period that has been demanded by a Federal Judge in Fresno. The State DOJ says that they cannot always do an Instant BG check. Actually, it’s just a BS smokescreen to delay as long as possible the implementation of the judge’s order, because the order exempts first-time buyers.

“The Director, in my opinion, is lying at worst, stretching the interpretation at best.”

But isn’t that the SOP for all our government officials? If one of them ever told the truth, they would probably loose their job. Just look at the poor woman Visa investigator who tried to expose the fraud with H-5 visas. They went out and damned near destroyed her.

Judging from the New York Slimes article I just read, the FBI is now saying it was a "loophole" in the BG check system.

According to the article:

A loophole in the check system allowed the man, Dylann Roof, to buy the .45-caliber handgun despite his having previously admitted to drug possession, the bureau said.

“We are all sick this happened,” said the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey. “We wish we could turn back time.”

It’d be a shame if the ones that screwed the background check had been hired and put in the position because of affirmative action.

We used to have officials that would tell the truth. Ones that had scruples. My mom (rest her soul) used to say that while there were Democrat/Republican differences at election time, they settled down and did what was best for the country. I believe that’s why we won WWII in part.

I later remember how Nixon was dogged out of office over 18 minutes by two of the biggest no-talent word-hacks that ever walked this earth. Nixon bowed to propriety and resigned, later redeeming himself with initiatives to China.

Fast forward to Billy “BJ” Clinton and the meaning of “is” and his enlistment of 400 “Constitutional Scholars” who in a 1998 NYT ad that stated a bl@w job (paraphrasing) isn’t a high crime or misdemeanor (totally omitting the lies to a Grand Jury) and we have the politics of “just drag a hundred dollar bill through a trailer part and see what whores come up” Bimbo Eruption Hillary and James Carville’s meme.

Fast forward farther to a pResident who won’t publish any of his records, the IRS, Lois Lerner, the IRS IG and whatever pathetic excuse they have for oversight, NSA, FBI, EPA, BLM et al and we have (in my opinion) EVERY Obama-appointed official in this government lying out their ass on cue. I just flat out don’t believe any of them.

The NICS check then would have rightly identified the action and refused the approval then?

This is still BS. If the ‘possession’ was a reportable infraction, it would have been rightly included in the NICS database. Unless the Federal Government is admitting they are drastically deficient in keeping their data updated.

This government is far, far more adept at letting hackers steal its information rather than keeping it updated.

Guns don’t kill people, a Democrats do.

Does anyone know if Dylann Roof is a registered Democrat. All of the other mass shooters in the recent past have been registered Demicrats and I think that we can assume that Dylann Roof is also a registered Democrat, due the lack of mention of his party affiliation in the press.

That said, I thought that roof’s father gave him the gun.

“We used to have officials that would tell the truth. Ones that had scruples.”

Gaffer, Your time line parallels mine. I was born in 1940 so I’ve seen what has to be the best of America metamorphing into a nation of Anti-American whiners who are shiftless, lazy and expect to be cared for their entire lives. One thing is certain, it cannot continue if this nation expects to survive. WWII was the last war we fought to win. Just look what our politicians have left in Korea, Vietnam, Bosnia and the Middle East! They have pissed away both our human and monetary treasure and they don’t have $hit left to show for it! God help us if the Chinks or the Russians decide it’s time to do something really big before Obozo leaves office.
They put skin color over competence as evidenced by this latest “not so wise Latina” who resigned today as Dir of CMP. But unlike Nixon, she had to be forced out of her office because she “embarrassed” Obama and not because she was simply incompetent. All you have to do is listen to her for 30 seconds to know she was unfit at the outset for that position. And to cap it all off, as you point out, virtually everyone lies, even the one’s that don’t want to because they are in fear of loosing their jobs if they tell the truth.
Trump is an unlikely candidate for president, but unlike the rest of them, he doesn’t really give a $hit what anyone thinks or that he has to “craft” what he says to “please” some wealthy POS who expects to manage him in office like an effing puppet on a string ( like our current president). We are on the cusp of failure as a nation. This next election may well be the tipping point. I’m too old for it to matter much, but I do worry about my children and their children and what we’ve managed to leave them.
