Doesn’t the deaf community resist cochlear implants and resist any “cure” for deafness as an affront to their culture?

Yes, but that's only a minority (very vocal, though). Most people in the Deaf community accepts people who have CIs because the times are changing due to the emergence of technology. Today, a high percentage of babies get CIs and for many of them, it is successful and they are able to function "normally" without learning ASL.

It wasn't always the case because CIs is a new technology and it became common only 20 years ago. At the time, it wasn't very effective. But we've gone a long way since then.

A video on how the use of cochlear implants is "fixing" deafness in children nowadays.

I am hearing disabled as well. This looks very promising, although I am sure that the Death Panels wouldn’t “approve” of treating a schlub....

It was in grade school in the late 1940s that I learned for the first time that not everyone had ringing in their ears. Normally, I don’t pay any attention to it, but when discussing it, the annoyance heightens. Back in the day when I smoked the occasional joint, the tinnitus rose up and felt like a calliope in my head.

Most of the time I can ignore mine. Now, my ears are singing like mad.

With the use of cochlear implant, Rush is abler to identify familiar tunes and lyrics.
But new songs by 50 Cents? No way of understanding words.

I have tinnitus and sounds are muffled.

I’m in my early 60’s.

I hope in a couple decades that they can cure all this. Like say by the time I’m 80 and pretty deaf.
