The German-American friendship no longer exists. It may still remain between citizens of both countries, but not between their governments. Perhaps it has always been an illusion; perhaps the United States pulled away over the course of time. But what binds these two nations today cannot be considered friendship. Openness and fairness are part of the essence of friendship, which is about mutual respect and trust. A quarter century after the United States helped the German people restore their national unity, little remains of this friendship.
As new documents from WikiLeaks and reporting by Spiegel show, the NSA has been systematically spying on much of the German government. Americas spies not only listened in on Chancellor Angela Merkels private conversations about sensitive political issues. The NSA also bugged ministries, ministerial offices and other government agencies. Not even journalism is sacred to the Americansat least not in Germany. American spies monitored at least one Spiegel colleague in Berlinspies who represent a country that considers itself a guarantor of freedom of the press, one of the cornerstones of a liberal democracy.

They used to have a nice catalog.
In the above before the link, there a couple words I cannot seem to find.
Obama
Democrat
Maybe I missed them.
I guess Feldenkirchen didn’t want to attack fellow travelers directly.
The Germans were fools to think that everyone isn’t spying on everyone else. Sorry, no.
Looks to me like there is an effort by someone, like maybe Putin, to get the Germans to feel mighty and thus to isolate them.
Imagine...my surprised face.
Actually no need. I do not haZ a surprised face.
Actually I cannot imagine why anyone would think everyone is NOT spying on everyone else. I mean that why we all have some version of the CIA/NSA.
What do people suppose these agencies do? As for the pols “I’m shocked there is gambilng going on here” responses, I guess they really do think that little of their people’s intelligence.
Chicago 9, Illinois.
I get a big kick out of the birthplace of the Gestapo, SS Sicherheitspolizei (SiPo) and Sicherheitsdienst (SD) and the Stasi pointing fingers at anybody else.
Obama’s fault.
As you’ve probably noticed, the values of the Reich have been increasingly embraced by the leftists that now control American government, the media and academia. It’s just that they are going to send different people to the camps.
As Barth used to say on YCDTOT, I heard that :-)
Don't take it so personally, Germany. They do it to us, too.
This seems to be the anger of the Bertelsmann media group (historically guilty of being the biggest propagandist for the Third Reich) over something in Wikileaks mentioning that der Spiegel was spied on by the NSA. Doesn’t matter that the BND helped out; just create an excuse to go after the whole USA.
I'm shocked, shocked...
We would be derelict in our national defense duties NOT to spy on everyone else.
I am old enough to remember Commie spies infesting everything there.
So does the BND. But I doubt that the Germans would be outraged over Germany spying on the US. That does not excuse any NSA overreach to be sure.
Merkel has also apparently been courting eastern bloc countries and she’s been complaining about Russian meddling. Russians... meddling?... never!...
Whether the object be to crush an army, to storm a city, or to assassinate an individual, it is always necessary to begin by finding out the names of the attendants, the aides-de-camp, and door-keepers and sentries of the general in command. Our spies must be commissioned to ascertain these. As notations in that book also say, an army without spies is like a man without ears or eyes. A nation cannot exist as any kind of independent power without such means.
Article is in error- We have no "journalists" in America. We only have propagandists for the democrat party.
