CHICAGO LAWN When Marshall Hawkins walks around his neighborhood, he carefully picks a route based on the places where people haven't been shot.
"If there are flowers on the block, you can go there," the 38-year-old said. "If there's been police tape or gunshots, you avoid it."
Such is life for the former North Sider in his adopted Chicago Lawn neighborhood. Same for his kids: 5 and 7.
"On days that I can't pick them up and drive them to school, I give specific directions. 'Don't take this street. Go this way. Not that way,' " Hawkins said.

It's unimaginable to me to have to live in a war zone like that.
Someone here once opined:
All of societies ills can directly or indirectly be attributed to liberalism or liberal policies.
Would’ve be 1200 if Chicago wasn’t a “GUN FREE ZONE”
More signs, more safe walk areas, more gun free zones.
This is the community that was organized by Barky.
No, it is because Illinois has had a Republican Govenor for the last year or two that it has had soo many killings since 2010.
This is Bull$hit Barry’s home town. How is it he can stand in front of the American public... demand withdrawal of troops in Iraq based on too many lives lost... yet NOT say a DAMN word about the murder capital of the world... his “kinda town” Chicago is...
Biggest hypocrite and failure for a president this country has ever seen and experienced.
Sorry, I don’t see how that follows.
Adding more guns to a population that is highly criminal does not reduce violence.
Adding more guns to a non-criminal population may do so.
Definitely. If Governor Rauner would just give more money to Mayor Rahm, he could solve these problems.
*Sorry, I dont see how that follows.
Adding more guns to a population that is highly criminal does not reduce violence.*
Good people with guns stop bad people with guns.
If a thug knows that everyone is armed, he won’t attack you.
That’s why mass shootings occur where the shooter knows guns aren’t allowed. Like the nut who drove past several theaters until he found one that was a “Gun Free Zone”.
Everyone is armed in Switzerland. Not much crime there.
That toddling town!
Switzerland is a low crime nation. Guns do not generate low crime in a high-criminality population.
To carry this idea to its logical conclusion, let’s introduce guns into the prison population.
Does anybody think this would reduce violence in prison?
When used by a good guy, guns reduce crime. When used by a bad guy, they increase it. This is because guns are only a tool, not magical instrument that generate good or evil.
Or, to take another approach. Let’s imagine a highly violent population of tribesmen, who kill each other at a high rate with spears and bows.
Give every tribesman a gun and ammo. Will the death rate go up or down?
Do you think a single criminal in Chicago is following the gun laws? The gun-free zone only applies to law-abiding citizens.
Maybe another 5,000 gun control laws would help... or a big ‘march’ with old black men waving their fists....
Maybe another 5,000 gun control laws would help... or a big ‘march’ with old black men waving their fists...
And breathless liberal elite reporters stupid enough to think marching and gun control laws work...
Exactly, after the feel good march, the drive-bys could get back to important issues like the confederate flag and global warming.
Let's take the fantasy that criminals will obey the law and magically all guns will be removed from Chicago.
If this happens, then Chicago is even MORE dangerous, because the thugs know that there are no guns and you will have 16 gang members breaking into anyone’s home without any fear of being shot.
“When seconds count, the police are just minutes away”
Reporter: Why do you carry a gun?
Gun Owner: Because it's easier than carrying a 200 pound policeman on my back.
