The problem was that a religion claimed such authority at all.

And one of the very reasons for the First Amendment denying a "state religion".

Now we have a pope who means to insert himself into American politics AND embrace communism.

Galileo, perhaps inadvertently, made fun of the pope, a result that could only have disastrous consequences.

Probably not inadvertent. Galileo's personality drove him to tweak the authorities. He is described as "flamboyant and not adverse to publicity" and want to make waves to enhance his own reputation.

The goal of the papacy was not scientific truth, it was the suppression of something they saw as conflicting with their theology.

Not science, but metaphysics. The Church told Galileo to avoid taking his observations as literal truth. Galileo told the Church to stop taking the Bible as literal truth. Add the fact that Galileo was basically grandstanding, and it is easy to see why he lost the argument.

As a practicing Roman Catholic I feel I need to remind everyone that this institution has had all kinds of bad popes and when they forget the admonition “My Kingdom Is Not Of This World” .This church gets into all sorts of trouble. But survives.

These meandering homilys of This pope on temporal matters diffuse any theologic message Pope Francis offers. Snowballs should be thrown at those pointy hat supporters of his, as well as opposition clearly expressed to those meanderings during any visit Francis may make here.

Green Pope?
Just think of the skit Dave Allen would have done for this.

As Pope Francis has embraced the direst notions of climate change, one Canadian commentator compared Francis's bleak take on the environment, technology, and the market system to that of the Unabomber. "Doomsday predictions," the Pope wrote in his recent encyclical "Laudato Si," "can no longer be met with irony or disdain." With Francis's pontifical blessing , the greens have now found a spiritual hook that goes beyond the familiar bastions of the academy, bureaucracy, and the media and reaches right into the homes and hearts of more than a billion practicing Catholics.
