July 4 crowds ignore call to boycott Georgia park over Confederate flag

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (Reuters) - Fourth of July holidaymakers ignored a call to boycott Georgia's Stone Mountain Park, known as the "Confederate Rushmore," over its display of the contentious Confederate flag.

Hundreds of people had staked out spots at the 3,200-acre (1,295-hectare) privately run park by noon on Saturday for nighttime laser and fireworks shows. They shrugged off heavy rain on the park's busiest day of the year as well as the boycott call.

Democratic state Representative LaDawn Blackett Jones this week urged people to stay away from the park 10 miles (16 km) east of Atlanta because it flies three flags of the pro-slavery Confederacy alongside the U.S. and Georgia state flags.

Bobbie Smith of Fitzgerald, Georgia, who was camping at Stone Mountain with her family, called the boycott call "just stupid."

“This whole park is a Confederate memorial. If you don’t have the flag here, where on Earth would you put it?” she said.

The SC Confederate memorial was itself a compromise to the Left. They bitched about the flag being on the state capitol building, so an agreement was made for the memorial.

Just goes to show you, it's never enough with the Left.

Do not have much admiration for SC since that was where this all started back in Civil War Days. Over 600,000 American lives lost is a tragedy. That being said, this flag issue is a misdirected effort on behalf of those who are on a forced march to destroy this country. It is another wedge issue they will shamelessly use to degrade the fabric of America in order to destroy it. There are many offensive items and concepts around us constantly. Most of us deal with that in an educated and mature manner. Evil doers utilize emotion and hysteria. We must, and will use logic and reason.That is our dilemma.

You’ve got remember the Civil War generation was not very far removed from the Revolution. The South foresaw the onset of a strong centralized govt......just like the one they had fought a generation ago.

The view from a large part of the South was....”We just fought against a strong govt....telling us what to do, taxing us, etc.....and now we are setting up the same thing....no thanks”
