The Greek banks might (and I emphasize might) be closed for the rest of the week, until after the referendum on Sunday June 5th.

Don’t know about the Athens Exchange, though.

Looks like capital controls are now in effect. It’s a high-stakes game of chicken between Greece and the EU/IMF.

How will this affect the olive oil from Greece that I like to purchase at the supermarket? I suppose I could get olive oil from Italy, Spain or even California should the flow of olive oil from Greece be shut off.

Other than olive oil, I can't think of any other products I use that come from Greece. The only other Greek import I'm aware of is the Dukakis family but thankfully, the spigot of self-important big-government moonbats from Greece appear to have been turned off for a while now.

The thing is, most Greeks were going to suffer from another bailout. Their benefits were going to be cut to continue to subsidize the excesses of the ruling class. Meanwhile, the EU can force them to accept being flooded by migrants with who-knows-what political agenda.

If I were in that situation, I'd take it on the chin, default, suffer some, and go their own way. Isn't it really a matter of how much can the elitists scare the little folk?

Stavros! Nick! Yanni! Now wait... now listen... now listen to me. I beg of you not to do this thing. If the EU gets hold of this Building and Loan there’ll never be another decent house built in this country. They’ve already got charge of the bank. They’ve got the bus line. They’ve got the department stores. And now they’re after us. Joe, you lived in one of their houses, didn’t you? Well, have you forgotten? Have you forgotten what they charged you for that broken-down shack? Here, Constantine. You know, you remember last year when things weren’t going so well, and you couldn’t make your payments. You didn’t lose your house, did you? Do you think the EU would have let you keep it?

There a a lot of reasons for this clusterbleep - the Euro was a horrible idea, the predatory way the emergency loans were structured etc. But the bottom line is that this is a Greek tragedy mostly of their own making. You can’t run a country that promises everyone a minimum standard of living and government pensions for all while no one pays taxes.

If I were a Greek citizen, you know what I'd be doing right now?

I'd be celebrating the USSC decision on gay marriage!

Who cares about the economy. Gay "marriage" is what is important right now!

At this point it’s clear that anyone who has NOT withdrawn any deposits in a GREEK bank is a complete fool. For that matter, anyone who accepts a check written on a GREEK bank account is a fool also.

World markets will see a significant bump.

The EU banks are deeply invested and stand to lose 10's of billions.

Overnight.
