Alabama Senate Passes Bill to Effectively Nullify All Sides on Marriage

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (May 23, 2015) – This week, the Alabama state Senate passed a bill that would end the practice of licensing marriages in the state, effectively nullifying both major sides of the contentious national debate over government-sanctioned marriage.

Introduced by Sen. Greg Albritton (R-Bay Minette), Senate Bill 377 (SB377) would end state issued marriage licenses, while providing marriage contracts as an alternative. It passed through the Alabama state Senate by a 22-3 margin on May 19.

“When you invite the state into those matters of personal or religious import, it creates difficulties,” Sen. Albritton said about his bill in April. “Go back long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. Early twentieth century, if you go back and look and try to find marriage licenses for your grandparents or great grandparents, you won’t find it. What you will find instead is where people have come in and recorded when a marriage has occurred.”

The bill would replace all references to marriages “licenses” in state law with “contracts.” The legislation would not invalidate any marriage licenses issued prior to the bill being passed.

Civil marriage is a function of the federal Government. Church services marriage under the eyes of God.

This is a very interesting twist, and has a little discussed alternative background.

Right now, several states are considering ending licensing requirements for a whole bunch of activities that are currently licensed by the state.

First and foremost, of course, is gun licensing. But things like cosmetology, some types of counseling and consulting, etc. Even driver’s licensing has been brought under question because it has been noted that there is little correlation between the license and careful driving.

And turning marriage licenses into contracts makes a lot of sense, because a license is just “permission” by the state, but a contract takes into consideration lots of variables, and might even include a prenuptial agreement.

There is no limiting principle in Kennedy’s opinion that would limit “marriage” to two people. In fact I am thinking that before I pass I will “marry” one of my grandkids so they may get some of the vast amount of SS money that I have yet to tap. A large sum from my pocket since I was both employer and employee most of my adult life.

Because marriage is universal, it wasn’t invented by Christians living in the Roman empire or with various tribes of the world.

When a Muslim couple breaks up, who decides the divorce law? The same courts that decide for the Lutherans and the atheists, and the Hindu Americans.

Thomas Jefferson had a marriage license, and he dabbled in divorce law.

I have no clear idea of the existence nor location of a marriage license or certificate

I bet that you could find proof of your marriage if you were going into the military.

We lost. We will lose again. We are fighting a rear guard as we are pushed off the cliff of state. That’s the truth of the matter. We ate lorded over by liberal plutocratic assholes of a kind not even Orwell or Heinlein imagined.

You mean, if there wasn’t an income tax/etc. (which already violates a number of other Amendments...4th, 5th, 13th..), this wouldn’t be an issue?

The point being, you’re ~100 yrs. too late to the party

A flat tax, unlike a like-’Fair Tax’, does not nullify the issue vs. 13th Amendment....it is still an involuntary slavery tax (to degree).

Only a consumption would rightly restore these absurd discrepancies.

I ever said it was, but Jesus performed marriages, which makes it a tenet of Christianity. The advent of Christianity absolutely predates our legal system.

... or with various tribes of the world.

Of course it was. And their "holy man" or whatever, was NOT a justice of the peace.

When a Muslim couple breaks up, who decides the divorce law?

The one with the sword. And islam isn't actually a religion.

The same courts that decide for the Lutherans

Real Lutherans shouldn't get divorced.

the atheists

Atheists don't have Holy Matrimony, they worship themselves, so I guess they get to decide.

and the Hindu Americans.

Divorce in an arranged marriage?

Thomas Jefferson had a marriage license, and he dabbled in divorce law.

Good thing, since he also dabbled in Sally Hemings.

The Right REALLY needs to learn to speak and debate properly!

CLC acknowledges between the persons (I haven’t researched on what ‘persons’ would entail. Just husband/wife, H/W/W, etc.??).

The church recognizes a marriage between man and women before God.

Coaching the debate in the way you’ve stated...You already lost the war on words.

So childish nonsense, and a lying attack against Jefferson.

Way to go.

Marriage is not just a religious institution. It is our most fundamental and important civic, governmental, and economic institution.

That’s why Marx knew that it had to be destroyed for communism to prevail.

Well, I didn’t make it up.

I guess it’s a part of history you’d like to ignore, plenty to the contrary written on the topic.

I suppose you also don’t believe the he and Andrew Jackass are the the RAT figureheads.

God Himself created, defined, and instituted marriage at the very beginning.

Any definition that is at odds with the way He made it leads only to chaos and destruction.

No, civil marriage was just destroyed by the Left. It cannot be salvaged.

Then this free republic cannot be salvaged.

It is impossible to fulfill any of the stated purposes of the U.S. Constitution without this vital, fundamental CIVIC institution.
