California lawmakers Thursday approved one of the toughest mandatory vaccination laws in the nation, legislation that would eliminate the option for parents to keep their children from being vaccinated based on religious or other personal beliefs.
The measure, the most controversial taken up by the Legislature this year, would require all children who enter kindergarten in California to be vaccinated against diseases including measles and whooping cough unless a physician approves an exemption based on medical conditions such as allergies and immune system deficiencies.
As a mother, I understand the decisions we make about our childrens health care are deeply personal, said Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), a supporter of the bill. While I respect the fundamental right to make that decision as a family, we must balance that with the fact that none of us has the right to endanger others.
The Assembly approved the legislation Thursday morning on a bipartisan vote of 46-31. Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Glendale) opposed the bill, telling his colleagues before the vote that it violated the rights of parents to decide medical treatment for their children.
"The broadness of this bill likely also dooms it from a constitutional standpoint," Gatto said, accusing the state of "infringing on the rights of certain students to attend school." Supporters said it was necessary to protect all children.
"I'm a fierce supporter of parent choice in this decision. But I also believe with choice comes personal responsibility" said Republican Assemblywoman Catharine Baker of San Ramon. The Senate, which passed the measure earlier this month, is expected to approve minor amendments to the bill made in the Assembly and then send it to Gov. Jerry Brown's desk...

The omnipotent, omniscient, ever present, benevolent Government (Big Brother) is doing what he feels is best for children. The same group of people that feel the earth is overpopulated by 90% (see the book "Ecoscience") are now America's science and thought leaders in the vaccination industry (John Holdren, Paul & Anne Ehrlich) and they are very politically active.
As a Christian, no amount of fear mongering, open borders introducing 3rd world illnesses, obscure data, or even plagues will cause my family to be herded into forced vaccinations. I know some will dismiss us a Luddites, tin-foil-hatters, or some other juvenile attack, but God has protected all of our children up to this point and He will continue to do so (many of my kids are grown up)...and that without autism!
Psalms 103:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
Psalms 91:5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
Deut 7:15 And the LORD will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest , upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate thee.
God fearing people who love their children have them vaccinated.
This only applies to looneys.
(I am not saying this new law is good or OK).
If there weren’t so many hippy leftist parents, this would never have ever even been an issue.
“I’m a fierce supporter of parent choice in this decision. But I also believe with choice comes personal responsibility” said Republican Assemblywoman Catharine Baker of San Ramon. “
I’ve read and re-read the entire article you posted. So far as I can see, this paragraph isn’t in it! Catherine Baker is my Assemblywoman. I am meeting with her on Saturday, so I’d like to know where this came from.
“The one good thing about this ruling is that it may be the final straw for God fearing people (and those who love their children) to flee California. The State is already under God’s judgment with a drought of biblical proportions, but they continue to push the envelope of sin and open rebellion against God.”
This is simply nonsense! You need to seek out a mental health professional. If you live in California at present, I would offer encouragement for you to depart. Not having your children vaccinated unless there is a good medical reason for not so doing, is borderline child abuse. This law would be unnecessary if it weren’t for people who think like you do. You do not have the right, to endanger others because of some il-conceived notion that “God” doesn’t want you to vaccinate your children.
Wait, how does not getting vaccinated harm those who are vaccinated? Just curious.
This has nothing to do with faith in Government.
I’m sorry, but you have the spirit of anti-Christ.
Yea...because I love God and trust in him for my family? Are you a Homo?
“Wait, how does not getting vaccinated harm those who are vaccinated? Just curious.”
Oh please! I think you can figure it out!
No. You might want to explain....
1) There are quite a few children with compromised immune systems (including most kids being treated for childhood cancers) who cannot, for medical reasons, be vaccinated. If you refuse to give your child the measles vaccine, for example, your kid could easily kill one of these kids. That's beyond irresponsible and borderline evil.
2) The second reasons is a little harder to understand but just as important. No vaccine is 100% effective in preventing infection. However they can eliminate a disease in a community by significantly reducing each person's odds of catching a disease. It's a concept called herd immunity - each individual may or may not be completely immune but the population is immune. Once a sizable number of parents stop vaccinating their kids, that herd immunity effect goes away and kids who are vaccinated start getting sick as a result.
What do you mean, “Oh, please”? I ask out of genuine curiosity. I am young, have no children of my own, and I like to hear the arguments for myself before deciding upon an issue. There is no reason to be contemptuous. It is not my custom to blindly support positions out of pathos and emotions, and I like to have facts to back up my beliefs and hear the opposing viewpoints. I haven’t really decided how I feel about the issue as of yet. It’s not really a factor in my life because I have no children and probably won’t for at least several years.
“What do you mean”
It isn’t simply a matter of one kid going to school without being vaccinated. It’s about many going unvaccinated and coming into contact (at least here in California), with illegal children who have brought a host of diseases with them from Mexico and points south. Thanks to our turning a blind eye to illegals of all ages, we are seeing diseases that have been wiped out here for 50 years or more. Unfortunately, this is kinda like seat belts. If people were smart and responsible, we would not need seat belt laws. Most people wear seat belts because they know their value. I don’t buckle up each time I get n the car because I fear the law, but because I know they are there to save my life should the need arise. Same for vaccinations. But unlike seat belts, medical care suffers from misinformed ideas about the value of vaccinations, some “religious tenet,” or just plain stupidity which is about the same thing. If Ebola were to break out, and there was a vaccine to protect us, would you not do what’s required to protect yourself ( and everyone else)?
Some are crowing about their “rights.” Well their “rights” get to stop short of being able to harm someone else.
Good medical care is a blessing that we (in spite of Obamacare) have in abundance. To not avail yourself of that benefit is just dumb, and to not give you children care, is criminal.
This is a red hot topic around here in the North Bay, Grateful Dead Libertarian Grannies against their Starbucks visiting, latte sipping Helicopter Moms.
Vaccine strain of measles identified in outbreaks
Putting vaccinated, shedding children in contact with immune compromised children is criminally stupid.
Herd immunity is a fallacy. If members of a group are immune, they are less likely to contract, incubate and spread to others. It does nothing for a susceptible person in contact with an infected person. The rest of "herd" doesn't mean anything. Immunity isn't absolute either. You can be infected in spite of "immunity" if your "titer" against the pathogen is insufficient to overcome a massive inoculation. A sub-clinical exposure may be effectively repelled with a low titer.
