CNN's Don Lemon on Tuesday hinted that there will come a day when the United States will have to "rethink" tributes such as the Jefferson Memorial. After a contentious segment with Ben Jones, in which the former Congressman defended the Confederate flag, Legal View host Ashley Banfield brought up the author of the Declaration of Independence.
She reminded, "There is a monument of him in the capital city of the United States. No one ever asked for that to come down." At first, Lemon asserted that the comparison was not "equal" and that Jefferson "was a part of the entire United States." He then added, "There may come a day when we may want to rethink Jefferson, I don't if we should do that. But when we get to that point, I'll be happy to partake in that particular discussion."
A transcript of the June 23 segment:
12:30
ASHLEIGH BANFIELD: But he made a good point in the pre-interviews that we did with [Former Congressman and actor Ben Jones]. And that is this, Jefferson owned slaves. Thomas Jefferson owned slaves, third president of the United States. And there is a monument of him in the capital city of the United States. No one ever asked for that to come down. Is it equal?
DON LEMON: No I don't think it's equal because Jefferson was a figure that -- who part of the entire United States, not just the south. And that doesn't mean that Jefferson was perfect or anyone is perfect. And our history is not perfect. There may come a day when we may want to rethink Jefferson, I don't if we should do that. But when we get to that point, I'll be happy to partake in that particular discussion. But right now I don't think the two are equal. It's not just, you know, well what about this and what about this and what about this. We're talking about nine people who are dead, who were slaughtered. We're talking people in the south who have been sick of that flag and living under the impression of that flag for generations.
Lucky for Don Lemon, no one will ever question whether his statue should be removed. The most he’ll ever merit will be a urinal target!
You know, they NEVER showed this on the television! How did he keep them from Weezie? Maybe they stayed down at the dry cleaner place?
I guess George was really movin' on up!
To jump on the insanity bandwagon, I’m offended by the country named ‘Nigeria’ and want it changed immediately!
The way history is taught in schools these days, not, he may be right.
Michelle Obama said in 2008 that America’s history and traditions would have to change. Orwell was right about Stalinist revisionist history.
I don’t think so. If liberals want to tear down statues of our founders because they own slaves. Where does Obama fit in. Were not his ancestors on his daddy side were slave traders?
Mebbe we should give them what they really want. America. Give it to the messycans, the ragheads, Al Pimpton and company. Then the white castrated liberal pu$$ies will see why Africa is in the toilet, messyco is a toilet, and everything the ragheads touch turns to a toilet. They'll turn it into the place that everyone wants to get out of. Sort of like kalifornia.
And the hits against American history and heritage just keep coming. Thomas Jefferson is my least favorite of the founders (I don’t like his support of the bloody French Revolution and his advocacy of perpetual, periodic violent revolution), but certainly his role in the Declaration of Independence deserves recognition.
Mr Jefferson ran his dry cleaners with slave labor!
Isn’t that the truth? These people are like Egyptians would be trying to destroy the pyramids because slaves built them. Bless their hearts they do not know any better and they should get an education. I have never seen so many real dummies in office.
No. I will chain myself to historical monuments before I allow these savages to desecrate them or remove them. Thomas Jefferson, for all his faults, did his best to serve this country. It’s stupid to apply modern beliefs and viewpoints towards those who were products of their time.
“The KKK was founded by Democrats as a post-civil war terrorist insurgency (just like we saw in Iraq).”
Actually that’s not accurate. The KKK was founded as a business fraternity, similar to the Rotary Club today. It was hijacked by southern Democrats to keep freed slaves from having businesses to compete with white business. It went quickly downhill from there.
Yeah maybe that Monticello thingy needs to be shut down!
Should we paint the White House black and change the name too? I am so sick of this politically correct crap. Everyone is offended about there being something they think might offend someone else. Most of these yokels could really care less about offending someone they just have to be in that “I’m better than you because I care” crowed. If southerners cannot have symbols of their heritage then Americans precedents of African, Mexican, or other countries should not be allowed to have anything representative of their heritage. I feel the winds of rebellion blowing stronger every day and if a revolution ever happens you know who has the most guns, ammo, and most capable patriots don’t you? The south.
