On the order of Gov. Robert Bentley, the Confederate battle flag which stands at the foot of the confederate memorial on the state Capitol grounds was taken down this morning.
Two workers came out of the Capitol building about 8:20 a.m. and with no fanfare quickly and quietly took the flag down. They declined to answer questions.
Moments later Gov. Bentley emerged from the Capitol on his way to an appearance in Hackleburg. Asked if he had ordered the flag taken down, the governor said, "Yes I did."
Asked his reasons for taking it down and if it included what happened in Charleston last week, the governor said, "Yes, partially this is about that. This is the right thing to do. We are facing some major issues in this state regarding the budget and other matters that we need to deal with. This had the potential to become a major distraction as we go forward. I have taxes to raise, we have work to do. And it was my decision that the flag needed to come down."

Actually, the people should seriously put this BACK on the table, and distract the governor from raising taxes. ‘Oh, I can’t take time off from work, I can’t afford it...’ Well, no, what you can’t afford is paying more taxes, which will happen if you let this moron have more time...
This exemplifies why I’m really to the point of actually HATING the GOP moreso than the Dems. Because of this grotesque cowardice, which adds an extra element of contempt and disgust. I know the Dems are at war and wish to destroy everything I value. But for the GOP to constantly bend down and lick their shoes... that is something I just viscerally can’t stomach.
I bet they have no issue with flying the queer rainbow flag.

The few bigots that are in Alabama (black and white ones to be sure), as opposed to the Alabamians I have known for so long, taking the Confederate flag down is really going to change their hearts. Bwahahaha, only liberal fools would believe that is the solution.

Hmmmm. I remember a huge one near Tampa close to where I-4 and I-75 cross just to the soutwest of the interchange. I think it’s on (so called) private property. Will those folks be compelled to take it down? And I mean a HUGE flag.

I am born and raised a yankee. As Alabama governor, I would have kept the flag where it always has been. If any media twerp asked me about it, I would ask, “Where was this controversy last week, last month, last year???” I would go on and say the Confederate flag is not about race but states rights and sovernity......something that this recent media frenzy is actually undoing. I would finally tell the media twerps that if they don’t like it they can go kiss my a$$.

They cherry pick one out of a trillion events ( a deranged individual) shooting people . The news media makes this cherry picked event now the top news of the year and then they make this about a confederate flag and shutting down freedom and free speech
When I wa youner Northern liberals always accused the Southerners of still trying to fight the Civil War. In truth it is Northern Liberals who insist on fighting that a\war and will continue to fight it until the southern states, and all the rest of the states, have no identity left except as departments of the “Federal” Government.
Use of the Confederate Flag by a insane person certainly deflects from his manifesto as his excuse citing the assults and murders of completely innocent whites, “hispanics, and asians, committed by black youths and their reason for the cold blood killing of Treyvon Martin. Doesn’t it ?
