Syrian military and Druze allies join forces to fend off 'terrorists'

Syria is believed to be home to about half of the estimated 1.5 million Druze worldwide.

Interviews with Druze civilians and fighters here confirm that many regard the rebel advance as a threat to the Druze's existence. Sunni Islamist groups like Al Nusra Front, the Al Qaeda affiliate in Syria, and Islamic State, an Al Qaeda offshoot, view the Druze as heretics.

The rebels have acknowledged battlefield coordination with Nusra militants.

This month, alarm spread among the Druze population when Nusra fighters killed at least 20 Druze in Qalb Lawzeh, a village in the northwestern province of Idlib.

Other reports have indicated that the extremists had forced Druze villagers in the north to convert to the militants' ultra-fundamentalist version of Sunni Islam.

Like other Syrian minority groups, the Druze are generally viewed as supporters of the government of Assad, a member of the Alawite minority sect. Minorities and secular Sunnis are key to Assad's support base.

About 27,000 Druze fighters, the cleric said, were being incorporated "under the umbrella" of the Syrian military.

Some of the most strident calls to defend the Druze of Syria have come from Israel, home to a substantial Druze minority, including many in the occupied Golan Heights.

"The Druze sect is facing existential danger," Hamad Amar, a Druze member of the Israeli Knesset, warned publicly last week, adding that his sect "will not stand with its arms folded before any current or future danger facing our brothers in Syria or elsewhere."

In recent weeks, thousands of Druze living in Israel have taken part in rallies in support of coreligionists in Suwayda and elsewhere in Syria. Many also harshly criticized Israel's ongoing medical treatment of wounded Syrian rebels, who, the Druze said, include Nusra militants.

US backed rebels fight alongside Al Nusra, an Al Qaeda linked group that genocides minorities in Syria.

The USA isn't ignoring those committing genocide -- its trained rebels are coordinating with and fighting alongside them to facilitate it.

Druze like many other minorities in Syria are struggling to avoid being wiped out which they expect would happen if Islamists take over.

Syrian christian leaders met with McCain and begged him to stop funding the rebels who were wiping them out. McCain threw a tantrum and rudely stormed out of the meeting.

I think that the ISIS phenomenon may end up unifying the world against the Sunnis finally. I hope it happens and that Sunnis start getting chased out and attacked everywhere throughout the world.

All the men should be like that. We shouldn’t accept any refugee men not willing to defend their own people. They’re pathetic excues for men if they’re not willing to fight for their homeland and people.

Druze soldier of the Druze Herev (Sword) Battalion.

The Herev battalion has since been disbanded and Druze soldiers integrated throughout the IDF.

The Druze soldier looks like a real man willing to defend his family and homeland.

We shouldn’t be allowing any of the “refugees” in this country that aren’t willing to do the same. These weasels come here, hate our lifestyle, hate us, and hate the USA. We don’t need them here — especially at our expense. We need to send them all away and tell them to act like real men.

The fact that we supported an Al Qaeda linked group is mind blowing.

The thugs in Washington that supported such action cannot begin to fade away soon enough.

I can find only one story about 8 soldiers arrested for selling weapons. 2 of them were Druze.

I was telling someone the same thing two weeks ago. One of these Jihadi groups - and most definitely a Sunni-based Jihadi group espousing wahhabi/salafist ideology - will be ‘too successful’ one day. They will pull off an attack that no one will be able to ignore, and that will be the catalyst that leads to their demise.
