Why Does McDonald’s Want to Rebrand as a ‘Progressive Burger Company’?
National Review ^ | 6/17/2015 | George Will

Posted on 06/20/2015 1:43:20 PM PDT by RightGeek

In January, McDonald’s, leaning against the winds of fashion, said kale would never replace lettuce on its burgers. In May, however, it said it will test kale in a breakfast meal (breakfast is about 25 percent of McDonald’s sales). Kale might or might not cause construction workers to turn at 6 a.m. into McDonald’s drive-through lines, where approximately two-thirds of McDonald’s customers place their orders.

McDonald’s also says its milk will soon be without artificial growth hormones, and chicken (McDonald’s sells more of it than of beef) will be free of human antibiotics. All these might be good business decisions and as socially responsible as can be. They certainly pertain to McDonald’s new mantra about being a “modern, progressive burger company,” whatever that means.

The meaning will perhaps be explained by the progressive burger company’s new spokesman, Robert Gibbs, formerly Barack Obama’s spokesman and MSNBC contributor. McDonald’s British-born CEO Steve Easterbrook clarifies things, sort of, while speaking a strange business dialect: McDonald’s will be “more progressive around our social purpose in order to deepen our relationships with communities on the issues that matter to them.”

Suppose, however, you just want a burger and fries, not social purposes and relationships? You might prefer Five Guys or Shake Shack, where the burgers taste fine even without the condiment of community uplift.

[snip]

McDonald’s, deep in an identity crisis, is awakening tardily to Ira Gershwin’s truth: The Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble, they’re only made of clay. Everything is perishable, and history is a story of vanished supremacies. Easterbrook, channeling his inner Hillary Clinton, vows to “reset” McDonald’s. Perhaps his reset will go better than hers did with Vladimir Putin.

Although you didn’t write to me, I’d say experiment. Try frying them in that Hormel stuff (pork kidney fat) and if that doesn’t work, talk to your butcher about getting some fresh lard. Beef tallow is just fat, right? Freeze enough and then fry some potatoes in it. Duck fat is also delicious.

Sorry, wasn’t clear. No idea if beef tallow is available. Lard works. May even be better.

I like Wendy’s burgers big time but not their fries. Shake N Steak is less cost then Five Guys for sure.

you speak the truth. lots of McDonald’s restaurants became an unsafe place to be if you weren’t black, so non-blacks started avoiding McDonald’s. unfortunately, sometimes people unfamiliar with an area mistakenly stopped at one of those restaurants and bad things happened.

http://defund.com/4-white-teens-stumble-into-mob-of-hundreds-of-black-males-settling-an-argument-get-viciously-beaten-2-dead/

this was by no means an isolated incident. youtube is full of videos of black teenagers fighting or behaving like monsters in McDonald’s restaurants with the McDonald’s staff doing absolutely nothing about it. they are not safe places to be, especially after dark, if you have the wrong skin color.

They bowed to the health Nazis, mom. And they’re now sitting around, 25 years later, trying to figure out what happened to them. Stupid corporate libs.

We don’t have Shake N Steak in our area. I forget where you are! I’m in the northeast. Luckily, my mom (in a nursing home) only likes hamburgers - mostly White Castle which are either Grease Heaven or Grease Hell, according to one’s beliefs.

BTW, i'd eat a lot more fast food if in-n-out had stores here in Colorado. i didn't really buy into the hype when i lived in The Peoples Gay Republic of Drugifornia, but now i'd gladly strangle a hippie to have an in-n-out within easy driving distance.

Crisco still sells! It’s great for making pies.

The best thing they can do is fire its leadership...

Yes, but at this point, they've already sacked the black guy, then if they sack the limey after six months, it will be like that Monty Python "sacking the sackers of those responsible..." movie beginning.

IOW, the directors would have to admit they made another mistake, and any institutional stockholders might end up divesting themselves of any remaining shares.

At this point, they should fire themselves after dumping this wrong-headed, wrong-hearted, and self-loathing panderer.

I can't remember the last time I had anything from McDs. Just not interested, but now the CEO is irking me enough to actively avoid McDs.

By golly, you revived an old memory. Grandma did use Crisco for fries. Mainly used it to make the most wonderful flaky pie crusts.

I wonder if the composition of Crisco is the same now as it was then.

Peter Principle in Action Award. No longer competent in their original purpose they are trying to be competent in something that has nothing to do with their purpose.

Some people may be in the market for a groovy, hip, socially conscious burger joint. Me? I’m in the market for a burger joint that sells hamburgers, of all things.

I am in Florida, but actually go to Steak N Shake when I am in Indiana visiting family. We have Steak N Shake in Florida but for some reason I have not gone there in Florida. God Bless your Mom and you for taking her a burger on occasion, you will cherish those times together always. God Bless both of you. My Mom died in November 2013 so I always get a kick out of nice stories like yours. Take care.

It was HIndus that thought the fries were vegetarian, IIRC.

"Why Does McDonald’s Want to Rebrand as a ‘Progressive Burger Company’?"

As evidenced by the ’08 elections, low-information citizens seem to be willing to bet their part-time pay checks on anybody who either uses or implies the PC term “change.”

McDonald’s is an insult to hamburgers. It’s the last place I’d go for one.
