That would be Virgil Earp, the Marshal of Tombstone. Wyatt was his deputy as was brother Morgan. See my post above regarding the need for gun-control in frontier outlaw towns.

Virgil Cole was the town marshal of Appaloosa Texas. His deputy was Virgil Hitch a former US Army officer who preferred an 8 gage to a .45

(both are fictional characters of a series by Robert B Parker)
