President Ronald Reagan carried a handgun with him at all times during his years in office, author Brad Meltzer writes in the New York Daily News.

Meltzer says he was doing research for his latest thriller "The President's Shadow," and wanted to talk to Secret Service agents about how the president lives.

At Secret Service headquarters he was taken to a small museum area where he saw such items as a newspaper marking John F. Kennedy's assassination and the actual door from the limousine Reagan was getting into when he was shot by John Hinckley Jr.

"It was an eerie keepsake for sure," Meltzer writes. "But not nearly as eerie as the next detail they told me. We were talking about Reagan and that day he was shot. Then one of the agents offered this secret: When Reagan was president, he carried his own gun."

Reagan carried the .38-caliber in his briefcase, and even took it onto Air Force One, Meltzer was told.

Carrying a gun is always smart IMHO-—but it’s not much use against an ambush from a third story window.

I suppose one intent of this story is to promote the leftist cowboy image. However, for me, it has the opposite effect.

Just after his death, there was a billboard in San Diego that showed President Reagan and it was captioned:

"Now, there was a Man"

Interesting fact, Reagan was born left handed but was taught in school to do things right handed, though he still shot left handed.

I heard a bluegrass musician talking once about going to the White House and meeting Nixon, at the moment they were shaking hands, he remembered he(the musician) had a pistol under his coat, which he always carried for self protection...
Times have changed a bit, eh?

Love how the second picture shows that a good rifle can lead to a great smile.

I have a 1982 issue of American Rifleman with Reagan on the cover. To think that that would have taken place even in my lifetime without really any eyebrows raised over something like that.
