FOOD FOR THE SOUL: THE CHOPIN NOCTURNES

This nocturne gained its fame from Franz Lizst orchestrating it for a ballet based on Chopin piano pieces, ”Les Sylphides”. It’s of almost unearthly beauty, and the middle section in the minor frames an epic sadness. This is another blurry screen ending. It’s my favorite among the nocturnes.

The pain and sadness of the opening material yields to a chorale in the middle. The first section returns with ornamentation.

I love them all, but this one is especially lyrical. :-)

This is the enharmonic and polar opposite of its partner in this opus. The middle sections make time stand still.

And the very last arpeggio is MAJOR...like a ray of hope after all that sadness.

This is another piece where Fred makes the clock stop. The middle section in C Major is majestic, but turns back to sadness.

Chopin doesn’t use C minor all that often. The etudes and preludes have C minor entries because they have an entry in every major and minor key. There is a polonaise in C minor and this nocturne, but not much else.

I like the way he scrolls through all the keys when writing a series or related works.

He did that for the preludes and etudes, but not anything else.

Well, I knew that about the etudes, which makes sense because they are study pieces.

At some point, I’ll revisit the other Chopin pieces by genre.
