1. On Obamacare:
I think the best legislative option is to allow states to opt out, Cruz said in the Capitol. I am cautiously optimistic that the Supreme Court will conclude in King vs. Burwell that the Obama IRS disregarded the plain language of the statute and acted lawlessly. And when that occurs, it will be a real opportunity for Congress to lead.
Here is a little bit more on what an opt-out might look like.
2. On trade: TPA is what the Senate voted on recently. I voted in favor of fast track because I support free trade. I think free trade benefits America. It creates jobs opening markets to our farmers, to our ranchers, to our manufacturers, improves economic growth. In Texas alone, roughly 3 million jobs depend on international trade.
And if you support free trade, the only way history has shown free trade agreements get negotiated is through fast track.
Now there is a second issue which has caused a great deal of confusion and that is TPP it is one specific trade deal that is being negotiated. It is separate from TPA. Congress has not voted on TPP, and theres a great deal of concern about TPP.
Now, I have not voted on TPP, and I havent decided if I will support it or not, because the negotiation isnt complete, and Im going to wait and review and see what the agreement is first before assessing if it would be beneficial or harmful.
Much more hereincluding a response to Senator Jeff Sessionss claims about TPA.
Gotcha.
I don’t know what choice they have but to double down. Think of all the possible options for him voting the way he did. He didn’t read the preliminary copy of TPP. He didn’t understand the part about the filibuster. His wife’s bosses at Goldman-Sachs told him too.
They’re all either conspiracy-sounding crazy, or show that he’s lazy and/or a moron.
The ONLY one that works is that Jeff Sessions and the others who have seen it too are lying. That may be the case, but we WILL find out eventually. So if Sessions and the rest are lying this is a really smart move by Cruz. But if he’s telling the truth Cruz has almost certainly destroyed himself. And much worse than Perry did in 2012.
They need TPA to pass TPP because they know they can’t get a two-thirds majority to vote for TPP. That’s the bottom line.
If you look at the 62 page TPA text It states that there are 5 versions The text is the Amendments Title I Trade Promotion Authority Sec 101 - Sec 111 Title II Extension of Trade Adjustment Assistance Sec 201 - Sec 212 Note the following are within the TAA - Child Tax Credit not refundable for taxpayers electing to exclude foreign earned income from tax. Coverage and Payment for renal dialysis Modification of medicare sequester for fiscal year 2014. What do these issues have to do with Trade Adjustment Assistance.
Many of the people voicing objections were stating that wahat was being voted was 29 Chapters and 800 pages. What we have here is not the full text of TPA!
If that is true, and I am not saying it isn’t, we haven’t got anybody we can trust. Just a hard lesson from the bible that is sinking in.
So he knew what he was doing using the filibuster to shut down the government.
But he was clueless about this being an almost identical situation.
Gotcha back.
See Post #4 - highly secretive - congress critters can read it in seclusion but may not take notes. Isn’t that just the way we want our legislators to do their jobs? No idea why this is so!
Please keep in mind that there are many people here with an agenda to erode Ted Cruzs support. We dont know who they are: other Republican campaign operatives, Hillarys camp, union thugs, Castro brothers, ISIS, LGBT, etc. What we know is that they fear Ted Cruz the most. Free Republic is a Conservative site. Most of us here support Ted Cruz. Naturally, Free Republic is turning into a battleground. Are we going to surrender?
I would prefer to be governed by honest morons rather than dishonest geniuses.
We will weed them out, but actions by politicians speak on there own.
Correction:
Free Republic is a Conservative site. Most of us here supported Ted Cruz.
Then we got his stands on TPA, TPP and H1B and many of us are now reconsidering our support.
Ted Cruz is self destructing. We are not moving away from him. He is moving away from us.
Ditch the tinfoil hat, would’ya?
These threads on Cruz and TPA have been incredibly substantive and respectful on both sides. With most of the participants, again on both sides, being long time members with well established posting histories.
“Please keep in mind that there are many people here with an agenda to erode Ted Cruzs support.”
No many intelligent adults here at FR realized that Ted Cruz had a lapse of judgment as did Marco Rubio when he tied his wagon to the Gang of Eight deal. Marco got a hard smackdown for it and Ted is also going to feel the pain. In all likelihood it will cost him his presidential campaign.
Yes, Cruz has squandered his base. His support for H1B already was dragging him down. His support for ObamaTrade, given that it was reported to have immigration enhancements in it, is what caught my attention. He’s made a huge miscalculation on his H1B/legal immigration position. It will be very hard to regain the momentum now. At this point I don’t think a mea culpa will turn it around. He should be looking toward his next senatorial race.
Give him time to reflect and repent. I still think he is a good man. Very disappointed though.
I kind of feel the way a lot of people did when it was revealed that Sarah Palin had decided not to run.
In this case it appears that Ted Cruz (the Tea Party guy we all knew and loved) has decided not to run (as the Tea Party guy we all knew and loved).
Someone put a pod next to him while he was sleeping.
All I want is a reasonable and rational explanation. Like I said earlier its still him or Walker.
What's going on with Ted and the TPA is classic lawyer wheeling and dealing where each side can walk away claiming victory.
Ted's side of the deal is that he can warm the hearts of the faithful by swearing on a stack of Bibles he doesn't like TPP, curse it with every other breath, and insist that anyone who voted for it is damned to Hell right along with Obama.
Meanwhile, rather than doing the right thing like Sessions, he helped make it possible for TPP to pass. In return for not rocking the boat (and he very clearly could have) he'll get a wink, a pat on the back, and a few wheelbarrows of campaign cash from the people who want TPP and know damn well it can pass with a simple majority but would fail a two-thirds majority is required.
I think his personal story has influenced his position on immigration. His dad came to this country and made it. I get it. I think there might be something in him that thinks he’ll betray that legacy if he turns his back on open legal immigration. I can see a son thinking that after what a father has sacrificed.
However, that doesn’t make open legal immigration and the displacement of American workers with immigrants a moral thing. It is grossly immoral, in my opinion, so while I might understand Ted Cruz’s motivation, that doesn’t mean I have to agree.
It is sentimentalism over sound judgment, and that is nearly always a bad direction.
I never heard or thought that he would turn his back on legal immigration.
