House Rejects Trade Bill, Rebuffing Obama’s Dramatic Appeal
New York Times ^ | June 12, 2015 | Jonathan Weissman

Posted on 06/12/2015 10:52:45 AM PDT by nwrep

House Democrats rebuffed a dramatic personal appeal from President Obama on Friday, torpedoing his ambitious push to expand his trade negotiating power — and, quite likely, his chance to secure a legacy-defining trade accord spanning the Pacific Ocean.

That is exactly what is being done. I’ve not gotten the details yet, but it appears the republicans might have passed something in some kind of maneuver.

It doesn’t matter. The people with an agenda, dont’ care what you or Ted says. They know better about this bill than Cruz. And, amazingly, he is now the biggest traitor running....

These people need to get a grip. Cruz is still the best.

TPA passed?...I needed to hear that....Good enough!!!!

The displaced worker support is what was voted down from my understanding. So now in order for ANY trade bill to be approved it must go back to the Senate without the Displaced worker portion. Without that portion the Senate will not get the 60 votes needed for cloture to even bring the Bill up for debate.

It's dead Jim... Dead as in D E D Dead.

Many of you don't know that the three bills could not advance unless all three passed. WE WIN!! Now we will see amendments-- those have to go back to the Senate-- we may get to see and analyse the 800 page attack on our sovereignty. The wonderful news is that this was a head shot to obamatrade. Can you fathom a republicrat that would ever vote such dictatorial powers to obama. There was immigration stuff all throughout the 800 page trade bill we couldn't see!! It leaked out that Pakistani workers could come by the hundreds of thousands and other country workers as well. We all know the horrible devastation of NAFTA on American jobs!!! who are they kidding? They are liars that said there was no immigration in the bill. What they were going to do was issue executive orders that if you were in a related trade business , you had to believe in global warming ( a total hoax) and pay an electrical power use tax to an international body. The loss of sovereignty was imminent!!
Defeat Paul Ryan next year!! I want to say thanks to my freeper colleges who worked tirelessly to stop this. I was amazed to see a half of the republican walk away from the C of C and Boner!!! What a sight for sore eyes. Everyone who helped — Thank you.

Ted Cruz has addressed every concern in this interview.

Addressed, yes -- but not put to rest. Ted Cruz read the secret agreement but only briefly, and was not allowed to even take notes while doing so. Long, detailed contracts are worded with great care by teams of lawyers, and fully understanding all their provisions requires long and careful study by competing teams of lawyers. The agreement is secret for a reason, and I do not trust the cursory reading of any man to be certain that it is harmless. Let's see it!

IT’S NOT OVER! I just read that “....House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) has decided to give Obama the weekend to try to coax enough Democrats into supporting the worker assistance package by bringing it up for reconsideration next Tuesday.....” Like I said, Unfortunately, It’s NOT OVER!

Bwahahahaha!!!! Irrespective what was in this crapola legislation, I’m glad it failed because it was “secret”...except to the lobbyists and insiders. Tyranny takes a small step backwards.

I think Obama had the meltdown this morning that I have long predicted. In his private meeting with the Dems. By all accounts he really p*ssed them all off.

re: “the Repubs might have passed something in some sort of maneuver.”

A fellow on Fox Business said that the Repubs called for a re-vote and will happen as early as next Monday.

There is just something too fishy about this.

It appears to be a lie. TPA passed. The only thing that failed was TAA (Trade Adjustment Assistance). Somehow this is all a massive misinformation campaign. I'm not sure how TAA keeps TPA from authorizing the president ot fast track TPP. In my mind, it doesn't.

In a slight surprise, HouseMajority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) announced after the TAA vote that the House would still vote on the fast-track measure, as well as a separate customs bill.

In the vote on fast-track, the measure was approved in a 219-211 vote. Twenty-eight Democrats backed fast-track, while 54 Republicans voted no.

Labor groups, including the AFL-CIO, lobbied Democrats to oppose TAA as part of a last-ditch effort to keep the fast-track legislation from coming up for a vote.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), who spearheaded the revolt, said that the TAA measure was “underfunded and wouldn't do enough to help displaced workers.”

...said Representative Nancy Pelosi of California...

What? I am on the same side as Pelosi? This must be a trap.
Either that, or the universe is getting ready to implode.

it appears the TAA vote was a red herring. They can adjust the provisions for TAA and make it acceptable to unions. TPA has already passed, so they’ll not move forward until they have TAA in the bag. Then they’ve got the whole shooting match.

We were just gamed.

And with TPA we will have 60 days to see it. Without TPA, we won’t.

It passed in a different version. So it has not entirely passed. They have to do a make-over to get both houses to agree. We are not out of the woods but neither is it on its way to Obama to be signed.

WE were not. GOP supporters were gamed as usual because they refuse to accept the evidence of their eyes.

Many of us told you this was to be a dog and pony show.

Folks, you will accept the truth eventually. you don’t want to. I get that. It’s hard. But you will. Your threshold will be hit because Mitch and Jonbon will push harder and harder every vote, every issue.Once the majority of the right accepts reality, we can BEGIN to fix this. Not until.

You are buying the lie that TPA gives more power to congress. It gives less power to congress and more to the executive branch. Why do you think Obama is for it? Congress will be able to vote but not filibuster. They won’t be able to amend it. Just up or down simple majority votes allowed. Congress is WAY too evenly divided to take that risk. Obama is the Power Usurper-In-Chief. Republicans have way too many benedict arnolds in their numbers to put too much faith in that. Have we learned nothing?
